Aww, I feel kind of bad for the Obamas, actually -- if you're making a sixteen-or-so-year commitment to a critter as intimate to your family as a dog, you want to *choose* whom you're committing to.

The peruvian dog is cute in an ugly sort of way, and I'm sure it's perfectly lovely, but what if the little girls had their hearts set on a poodle or a portuguese water dog or a bichon frisé? There *are* dogs with hair, rather than fur, which don't set off pet dander allergies. I bet those girls were picturing a soft furry critter, and now they'll be disappointed? :(
