Should the alcohol age be lowered to eighteen? No. Alcoholism is already rampant in our society. The younger the individual, the less emotional maturity, the more alcohol-related tragedies.
Just curious as to whether you believe the age allowed for military service should also be increased to 21? (Is an eighteen-year-old emotionally mature enough to be making life-and-death decisions in Afghanistan?) How does society draw these lines, and should alcohol be the last in the driving/voting/fighting/drinking sequence?
Off the top of my head, I sort of see it as learning to juggle:
First, learn to drive. Sober. Got that? Good. Okay, now try guns and deciding on your leaders. While sober. Okay, great. Now that the newness of the guns and the cars and the voting has worn off, have this stuff that impairs your judgment.
I wouldn't want to have to figure all that stuff out at once. While drinking. And unless the chain of command has been shot to hell, the 18-year-old doesn't make life-or-death decisions in Afghanistan, his/her CO does.
