I've got to give Best Buy credit for one thing - they actually had their act together when it came time for The Great Exchange. Mom and I arrived at Best Buy around 11:15, right after the store opened. I grabbed a cart and dragged the computer into the store. That's probably cause the system (most probably XP) attempts to install software, when it detects that you plugged in new hardware. I guess when trying to detect this monitor's specs it was encountering some sort of error, which caused it to show BSOD.
Blame Gates for his shitty system.

I forgot to mention it in my post, but said monitor that was the source of all this agony didn't display Windows right on my father's computer (at least not initially, I haven't asked him if he got it working yet). I think the monitor is 1) weird and 2) dying slowly. Not a good combination.

No wonder you were so eager to play UT2004 last night.

I'm considering buying that... Still haven't decided, though... considering the whole HL debacle.

UT2004's a damn fun game. Great maps, plenty of game modes, and a neat (if gimmicky) single player team management feature. Plus, it's $40 or less just about everywhere.

You could always give the demo a shot and see what you think.
