I am a city boy and when meeting a horse I attempt in my mind to put it into a pre-existing box. The horse is very large and upholstered, so it must be furniture. But no, it's moving around and looking at me. Susie is telling me that the horse is bickering with its neighbor, that it's happy, that it's misbehaving just a little. I can't really ( Read more... )

I felt the same way you do the first times I met horses. Whisper is the only horse that I have spent a significant amount of time around and he definitely has a lot of personality. I don't think horses see as well as humans and so they recognize people / other horses by sound, smell and touch. For example, I smell like horse treats (because they are in my pocket) and Whisper is usually quite obviously happy to see me (he lifts his head out of his food and makes a little nicker when I call his name).

Horses don't seem to be motivated by pointless physical attention (unlike cats), but do seem to enjoy grooming. If you can, spend some time grooming him and picking his hooves (if one must deal with poo, horse poo is vegitarian and much less nasty than carnivore poo). I think that helped Whisper trust me and also helped me be comfortable near him (i.e. no worries about getting kicked or bitten).
