Why the hell does every bloody menu item in this hospital have meat in it? Is it that hard to make one single vegetarian thing ( Read more... )

what are using for sources of protein if not meat?

Peanut butter, almonds, cashews, lima beans, kidney beans, chickpeas, tofu, textured vegetable protein...all kinds of stuff. Protein is absolutely not an issue, unless it's surruptitious bacon.

Um... I'm not trying to offend you or anything, man, but it sorta sounds like you're becoming really... I guess 'anal' about the vegetarian thing.

*winces* I'm sorry, but it seems kinda silly to get angry over the fact that most of their products contain meat, when you really haven't got any control over it. You kinda sound like my friend Rob, back when he was a vegan and went into fits every time I mentioned anything animal-related. :(

... of course, I'm the queen of getting mad over the dumbest stuff imaginable, so I should probably shut up. -_-;; Sorry.

Maybe I'm just inexperienced, but I thought that in most places that offer food, you can make special requests, like no bacon in the salad. The whole world doesn't work on "everyone eats meat", or "everyone is vegetarian", so I figured it could be requested. o.o;

And a thought - the broth may be flavoured beef, but is it real beef or artificial beef? If it's artificial, would it still be a problem?

Ordinarily, you can make special requests. To this day i've never had a problem when I go out to a restaurant, and most servers have been brilliantly accomodating and extraordinarily reasonable ( ... )

Ohhh, I see. Geeze... that's retarded, man. o.o You'd think that of all places, hospital cafeterias would, you know, accomodate people with food-health concerns. They should, anyway... is it possible to put in a suggestion for that? Hell, if McDonald's or Pizza Pizza will do it... that doesn't say much for hospitals.

*pats* If I could, I'd bring you in veggies meals. But I can't. :(

Good luck with that, though. Hopefully you'll figure out a suitable and regular way to eat as you like without hassels.

You should probably just pack a lunch. Or put some shelf stable food stuffs in your locker. Cafeteria food is scary.

That's what it's come to. Unfortunately I don't have access to a car or a nearby grocery store while I'm staying in Moncton. I have been able to pick up a few things, and I'm trying my best to alleviate it. Lots of apples and the like.

What's the mass transit situation like in Moncton? I'm in agrement with beesandbrews on the best solution being to just brown-bag it, but I also know what it's like to be stuck in Nowheresville without transportation.
If mass transit is available, get a bookpack or daypack, and you can transport a surprising amount of food in it.

I agree that going vegetarian (even ovo-lacto vegetarian) is a challenge because of lack of selection for on the fly meals. That is what broke me down. (And yep, I agree that it does make a difference if the broth is chicken or beef.)

But I hope you keep sticking to it because the best that I ever felt was when I was eating an ovo-lacto vegetarian diet. In fact, I am thinking of going back to it.

Does beef broth necessarily have beef in it? Couldn't it just have, like, artificial beef flavoring like Ramen or something?

A surprising amount of "beef" flavoring is autolyzed yeast

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yeast_extract

of course it tends to be supplemented with MSG and that's not all that good for you. It pays to read labels.
