There needs to be a whole "Cannot have a normal date, dammit" motif in 'fic. 'Cause it's funny, especially when things actually do go according to plan like here.

Except that "according to plan" means different things to the two of them. Which is why it's funny. I agree, date!fail is a subgenre unto itself.

I like that Ianto can't get out of operational mode long enough to realize that Jack's trying to do something for him, and Jack is perhaps a little too proud of remembering Ianto's wish (and a little too crushed when it looks like not coming off. So to speak). Miscommunication as usual for the boys. They are such an "in spite of, not because of" sort of couple, are they not?
