Via such_heights Ask me one fandom-related question in the comments. This can be fandom specific, general, or about fandom/lj stuff/fic writing/etc. in general
( Read more... )
1. Gwen-bashing fic (or character bashing in general, but Gwen-bashing is the most prevalent in TW fandom). For a while there, Gwen-bashing became quite rare in this fandom, but it's suffered an unfortunate (and to me, completely mystifying) resurgence since Children of Earth.
2. Fic that portrays J/I in an overly schmoopy twu wuv way -- especially when Ianto is portrayed as a total woobie who needs to go off and have a cry every time Jack looks at him sideways.
3. This is actually something I haven't seen for a while, but when I first started in this fandom, there were a lot of people who referred to Ianto as "Yan" in their fic. Fortunately, this seems to have fallen out of favour.
These days I tend to stick to authors that I know, or authors recced by people I know, which might be why I don't see much of "Yan" these days. Thanks for the link to the macros, they were really funny. :)
With the J/I stuff -- there are some excellent authors out there who write good J/I, well, "romance", for want of a better term -- that is, authors who write about them enjoying each other's company and showing genuine affection for each other, etc, without portraying them as schmoopy or OMG TWU WUV FOR ALL THE AGES, but it's a fine line to walk. One fic that I think has done this really well recently is You Have the Heart of a Star by electro_club.
I tend to avoid getting involved in ship wars (as in, I don't really have a problem with people shipping different pairings to me), but in terms of preferences -- in Being Human, I much prefer Mitchell/Annie to Mitchell/George. I think that, now that Annie is becoming more corporeal, she would be the perfect partner for Mitchell, since he wouldn't be tempted to suck her blood halfway through sex, and they both share a bond because they've seen death.
Just trying to think of other examples... I mean, in Buffy, I really liked Buffy/Angel (yeah, yeah, I know -- I'm a sap), but I don't see that as incompatible with the major slash ship of Angel/Spike (and also, Buffy/Angel/Spike FTW). And in Battlestar Galactica, I loved Bill/Roslyn and Kara/Lee.
What I really need right now is a story to give me some sort of closure and satisfaction regarding J/I, post-CoE. Something that can make me believe that Jack did care about Ianto's happiness in spite of CoE (not as a twu wuv thing, just as a caring thing), and something that makes Ianto more than just an appendage or plot device attached to Jack.
Hmmm... I think I'd be in charge of research, and I might also have some role relating to feeding the media plausible cover-up stories. I probably wouldn't have an action-type role.
Hmm... that's a really hard one. Usually when I envisage crossovers it's in a sort of "outside" space, rather than something that would involve a character from one show joining the main cast of another. I think many of the shows I've listed above have characters who could do well in Torchwood -- any of the Being Human trio, any of the Slayers from Buffy, etc, but I really do prefer to keep the shows seperate, at least in terms of their core team members.
I would love to see Sarah Jane on the Torchwood team though, even though I think SJA has pretty well ensured that that will never happen.

And the flirting on his part would be epic, especially if she didn't respond.
You know, I had an idea once for a Jack/Sarah Jane/Ianto fic. It involved fooling around on The Couch and takeout. Hmmm.
