When you eliminate the impossible...

So, I was googling Sherlock Holmes and Star Trek the other day, since there's a Holmes themed episode of The Next Generation which is relevant to a paper I'm thinking of writing, and I came across this detail: there's an early ST episode where Spock quotes the, "When you eliminate the impossible, whatever remains, no matter how improbable, must be ( Read more... )

star trek, sherlock, speculation

I come from a family of massive Trek fans, so if you need/want to see those eps, I can borrow mum's dvds for the afternoon when we're down for Mardi Gras. From memory, they're quite good.

Oooh! If your mum wouldn't mind me borrowing them, I would love that -- I'm especially wanting to see the first few seasons of TNG (as I'm interested in more than just the SH ep).

Well, the SH ep is in the second season, so I'll try and swing borrowing at least s1&2. I probably can't borrow the lot, because they're communal property between my mum and brothers.

That would be really lovely.

(But at the same time, if your mum and brothers are uncomfortable loaning them to someone they don't know, that's totally okay -- only if they're comfortable with it.)

I do like your idea here, and I wonder whether Moffat was thinking of this when he had Watson call Holmes Spock. I mean of course I think Holmes is quoting himself, as in Doyle canon but it's a nice little twist.

I had this row with my sister a couple of years ago where I was insisting that Spock is quoting someone else at the end of the Wrath of Khan with his "Needs of the many.." speech. She insisted he wasn't, it was an original quote, and when I googled about, turns out she was right. So Spock does come up with classic quotes himself.

Haha, I have no idea what Moffat was thinking (or Gatiss, rather -- I think he penned that episode), but I'd love to ask at a con. (I was hoping they'd mention it in the DVD commentary, but no such luck.)

Young Spock also uses that quote in the recent Star Trek movie - I just happened to walk into the lounge room the other night when the husband was watching it on TV, when Zachary-Spock said that line. It made me do a double-take and smile too :)

Haha, I had forgotten that -- I only saw the new Star Trek movie once, at the cinema. I quite enjoyed it, but I never got around to watching it again.

Actually there were two Sherlock-themed episodes of TNG that I remember. I'm not sure if the second is relevant to you but there were two.

They involved Data. I remember things about Data.

The one I've heard of is where there's a computer generated Moriarty?

There were two with the same Moriarty character. I believe the second was Ship In A Bottle. I think Moriarty became more... Moriarty like in the second one.
