I've just accepted that it's a new show, full stop, with a few elements of old TW thrown in. The smushing together doesn't bother me that much. I liked all the same things as you. Also agree that Jack is wooden. I think it's JB's acting, or perhaps bad direction, not sure. PC Andy - no opinion. They didn't give him any jokes, did they? He's usually joking around.
See, I think it carries too much baggage for me to approach it as a new show. There's still too many connections to the old Torchwood... but at the same time, too much that doesn't fit.
Well at least you tried it. I'm not at all interested and have now gone through the stages of moving on forever. Basically I couldn't give a shit and well I'm Doctor Who fan at heart.
Also, that's how I felt about CoE, too. It was TW squashed into another show. I wish he'd just made the other shows, you know? I'd probably have enjoyed both a lot more as a result.
I think at least with CoE, it fit into some broader political stuff that had been playing out in the Whoniverse. I think that if the Torchwood half of the plot had been written more carefully, then it wouldn't have felt so disjointed. With this though... well, it feels different to me.
I think they just had to cram so much "wtf is Torchwood?!" in the first ep that it can bug prior fans, but I'm so happy to see Jack and Gwen again. The ep suffered from not introducing Jack until halfway through, I think.
I suspect Andy will be helpful later, but he didn't have much choice here and he won't do anyone any good if he loses his job with the police or ends up in trouble. So the jury's still out on that for me. It would have made more sense for him to be more pissed off about the rendition, though.
It wasn't the Torchwood expositiony stuff that bothered me so much -- it just felt like the show was trying to be two different things.
However, first eps often suffer from these problems -- I don't know if you watch True Blood, but I found the first ep of S4 to be a bit jarring and underwhelming due to a time jump and a number of changes in status quo, but the subsequent eps have been excellent. So I'll try to keep an open mind where Miracle Day is concerned -- it might improve over the next few weeks.
Nah, Spiderine is the True Blood fan! I've only seen a few episodes years back.
The reviewers who've seen the first three episodes say it gets better (that's when we get into the Jane Espenson/Doris Egan eps, so... IDK, I'm looking forward to those especially, and the same would be true if this was an entirely different series with those writers tackling it.)
I've still not watched it. Being behind I was hoping that I'd hear enough to encourage me to watch it, but I don't think I'll be bothering. I'm in that sort of mood about it where the flaws will really jump out at me (seriously, taking in a helicopter to stop them when blowing them up worked so well last time?)

Doctor Who, is of course, awesome. Always and forever. Amy and River FTW, y/y?
