Portland

My newly immigrated friends and I were talking about it this morning over coffee as the weather oscillated from drizzle to sun, to cloudy, to breezy, to hot, to cold. Portland is really cozy. The city itself might have avoided the modern, mega-chain saturation, but the suburbs have embraced it.

Also, Sunday night Portland is probably the deadest city I've ever experienced. Weird...

Now that sounds pretty cool. Actually, the weirdest dead downtown experience we had was not on a Sunday, but on a Halloween. After many years in Santa Cruz, with the zany parade of costumed hippies traveling in a constant ring of color and roleplaying on Pacific Avenue, the culture shock of standing in a completely empty Pioneer Square at 9pm (resplendent in our Firefly-themed costumes) was harrowing. We were only one of two groups in the restaurant we ate in.

The next year was better. We stayed home and children (real children!) came and acquired many-much candies at our door.
