apparently women wore watches attached to pins, and this was a way of having a watch that wouldn't dirty your lovely white summer dresses.

AND in other crochet news, i have 1 mitten finished and one in process. i took an easy-peasy handwarmer pattern and have added a thumb and lengthened/closed the top. it works in lion homespun yarn, probably would look like crap in something that didn't cover up all the stitches as you go. yay mittens! in time to store them for next year, works for me.
