One of my favorite odd things about BSG in general is that it was fabulously cast. Quirky and interesting without screaming I'm trying to be quirky and interesting. And Jamie and EJO really look like family.
I've always loved the contact choice too. Although I completely unsurprising for me from EJO who comes across as very thougthful and detail oriented.
(I actually have a weird thing for casting left over from my time in the theatre as a stage manager and director. I would really like to write a whole series of journal entries filled general TV thoughts before the fall season starts, many of which center on casting. It's so make or break for a project and some people are not good at casting. hee.)
angry!baby!Lee is probably the biggest reason I got into BSG. I (and this should also be discussed in my TV entries, btw) have a distrust of female characters when shows first start and gravitate to male leads who don't quite fit the mold. So I loved that they made Lee angry and openly chidlish.
Wow, Adama's response to Lee about "all my pilots coming back" is echoed when Lee and Kara fight on the hangar deck about fraking Baltar. Those Adama men sure can't say what's on their minds very easily, can they?
It's interesting the connection between Adama and Lee here and Lee and Kara in KLG1. Adama and Lee are both, no doubt, wanting to say something much more or in the very least thinking something deeper than just pilots. Now, I feel sad for them, but you can see exactly where Lee learned his non-communicative ways.
It's telling that Lee chose to use the words "my father", instead of "the Commander", which is what he'd do if he was in the same headspace as the beginning of the miniseries, i.e. be bratty and passive-aggressive.
