Have I told you about my theory? That all religion started as some guy (or girl maybe, though most of my experience has been in the patriachal west) living in a society with rampant murder, incest, adultery, theft and other generally anti-social/-societal activities, and realizing that this is stupid and people should stop doing all those things and start being nice and respectful. Lacking sufficient authority himself, he (she) had to give the people some other reason for them not to do these things, namely some sort of divine retribution or reward. Hence religion is born.
It's so true. The universal principles are everywhere, if we just look closely enough.
Actually, I've always liked Reb Zalman's Gaia description of the world's religions. Each religion is unique, special. And each is necessary for survival, just like we need lungs, a heart, kidneys, and so on. Each religion serves its own function, both culturally and spiritually.
In that sense, I am not really a universalist, since I believe that there -are- differences, and that the differences are healthy. Hehe.
Thanks for reading all of that, by the way. And for making contact. I know you're stressed, and I'm a little concerned, to be honest. Take care of yourself, all right? [/mother hen routine]
We should have a long discussion on this subject someday, when both of us can scrape together six or eight free hours.
Good day, milady, and be well. Sir William of Drakenwode
I'll do my best, hehe. And yeah...I think I've been sort of living in denial about my stress. There's actually a lot on my plate...more than there's ever been. @_@ I appreciate your mother hen-ness. :)
And we totally should, at that. Maybe some Saturday afternoon, or Sunday afternoon. Hee.
I work a lot, but whenever you find the time, and the interest, make the suggestion. I'll browbeat my boss into allowing me to share the awesomeness, whether she likes it or not!
