So, for the past year or so I've been demoing a violet wand or DMing at 101 nights with some frequency. In that I have the wand and it's a touch showy, I often offer it as a centerpiece of a scene. Results

I think it's also relevant that "I've never tried it but it seems like a lot more than I'd want to try." isn't actually a no, or even a strong negative. A lot would depend on all the non-verbal aspects of communication, but that actually reads to me like there was an unspoken "But I'm willing to try it and find out I'm wrong"
