We stayed in Boot, and walked to this nearby, somewhat isolated church before going on the Ratty (small, steam railway) from Dalegarth to Ravenglass and back. My husband being a steam enthusiast and having indulged me most nobly the previous day in my desire to go up the Old Man of Coniston, a steam railway trip was most definitely in order ( Read more... )

Yes, very interesting. I looked quickly on the internet, and came up with this very sad story of his elder sister:

How sad! You can see his name on the cross too... and two other Porters, one in WWI, one in WWII - I wonder if they were relatives too?
