Hello, I use a Canon Powershot A640. The photos of my room are unprocessed pictures, but on the picture of me, I did like this in photoshop:
fist I put a green filter (on low opacity) over the picture since the camera tend to give the skin a slightly red tint.
then I went to Image - adjustment - selective colours there I changed "colour" to "neutrals" pushed the black levels to around -35
then I made a new layer and went to Image - adjustment - gradient map were I turned the picture black and white. The black and white layer was then given the "blending option" "soft light" (this can be found under layers, were it says "normal")
