This ep's been even more setup, but goddamn, it tore me in pieces over every character. On what other show do the deepest hopes and fears of pretty much every denizen of Harlan County get revealed by a slew of monologues from secondary characters as the principal actors hoof it from set to set? The whole part of Drew?Shelby, Ellen May, and Limehouse just did me in. Limehouse is kind of fascinating anyway, the last refuge for mistreated Harlan women.
Drew taunting Colt reminded me of Adama trying to taunt Saul into shooting him (different reasons, I know, but so powerful). The meta going on in my head from Jim Beaver as Deadwood's Ellsworth and now Drew was crazy...I can't NOT see him as a fundamentally decent guy who deserves a better fate. He did so well at showing the terror of a long slow death and hoping for a quick one. And Colt, the affable sociopath, playing him like that...gah.
The locations are wonderful :-) They're almost their own cast of characters.
I would totally watch a prequel of the previous generation of Harlan outlaws.

God, Jim Beaver just killed his scenes. That last one, it was pretty clear about two lines in what Drew's going for, but he's so determined not to show anything until he stops talking and Colt raises his pistol, and there's a split second that just barely makes it to the screen where you can see he's actually fucking terrified. Gah. So, so good. One of these days I will finally get around to watching Deadwood, in addition to six seasons of Buffy and the Wire and Mad Men.

Oh god. A show with Arlo, Bo, Mags, Helen and Frances and Limehouse. I will throw money at the screen for that.
