Yet another reason I wish we had detachable handles. Although, wow, Yani is talented. I thought it was supposed to be harder for them to wiggle out of the harnesses with martingales.
Also, I am quite envious of your universe-ruling powers.:)
LOl ... Nixon does this as well, get out of harness, it is quite bafling. I'd thought this would be more difficult if TSE is using the martingale! GDB has a swiss harness, and supposedly is a bit harder to get out of... and it has a detachable harness handle now... *jealous*... I'd have to wait for my next dog to get one, or fork 400 US bucks to purchase one...
Yeah, it does. And the strap with the buckle has to pass through another strap that goes from the chest strap down between her front legs. This strap also has a buckle. And everything was still buckled when I found the harness on the floor. I was impressed.
Hmmm. It's not too hard to get the battery out of the N82, the battery cover can sometimes be a trick.
Which screenreader are you using? Last time I checked, Talks only had beta drivers for the BrailleConnects (I have them if you want 'em), but MobileSpeak works out of the box. (I'm in universe ruling mode myself lately. There are a bunch of cool apps for the N82 like an IM client that actually supports GoogleTalk more accessibly than the PC client.)
And Pepper and Yani must be trading notes or something. Pepper frequently decides to escape from her harness. The best I can figure, she pulls one paw up and back through the strap, which makes it loose enough towriggle out of. First time I noticed her do it, I was in a bar with a friend, reached down and there was ... naked dog! Acting all pleased with herself and all, "I'm not in harness, can I go say hi to all the nice people sitting around with food they want to give me?"
Yeah, I did get the battery out. (Though the battery actually did initially give me more trouble than the cover, for some reason.) Do you h have an N82 now? I'd definitely be interested in the BrailleConnect Beta drivers for Talks (arm4r at virginia dot edu). (I'm thinking of buying MobileSpeak too, since each seems to have certain advantages, but I need to do more research before I shell out the change for that.) I can't wait to start finding apps for this phone!
That's funny about Pepper in the bar. I know Yani just thought I forgot to take the harness off--we were home, after all.
I gave in and got a KNFBReader and N82 a couple weeks ago. I'll probably get a license for both screenreaders for the same reason you list. (Will send the Talks drivers). There are a bunch of blogs about apps for Symbian OS. The one that actually also looks at their accessibility is at mobilespace.wordpress.com.
Harris has never tried it, but I have seen a couple of dogs wiggle out of their harnesses and it cracks me up! I hope you don't mind the question, but did you get any assistance in paying for the Nokia N82? The first thing that came to mind when I saw the press release on that phone was how much of the blindness population is under or unemployed, thus making such a purchase a bit of a challenge. Then again, the NFB sure knows how to squeeze milk out of a bull. LOL
I know what you mean about the expense. Hopefully, prices will continue to go down. This version is about $1300 less than the original KNFB Reader. The state bought me the original KNFB Reader and paid for the upgrade to the N82. I am paying for the screen reader and GPS. BTW, Virginia does not have a financial means test if someone needs assistive technology for a vocational purpose.
I'm impressed with Yani Houdini. I'm pretty sure that if Hermione ever gets the idea that she can get out of her Halti then she'll be slipping it off all the time.
I'm even more impressed with your finding prowess. Perhaps you can gift my husband with it. He has glasses, but is otherwise sighted and can never seem to find anything in our house! LOL
On a more serious note, would it help and can you teach Yani to find and get your harness in case she decides to ditch in a place less well known to you?
Hmm. It's kind of heavy, though I imagine she could drag it if she needed to. Or, she could take me to it. She does that sometimes if her kong gets stuck under the chair. :) This time, I found the harness by just walking around until I kicked it. :)
Yeah, taking you to it is probably better. I don't have Hermione drag things too much, because it tends to get the dragged thing tangled up with other things. But maybe your place is tidier than mine. :)
