CHARACTER NAME: Ruby
FANDOM: Supernatural
CANON: 3.18 No Rest For the Wicked
WHAT THEY LOST: Ruby will be losing all memories of Azazel's plan to release Lucifer from his box. This is quite possibly the only thing that's important to Ruby at this canon point, because aside from enjoying a little schadenfreude once in a while, she's pretty much dedicated her existence to Lucifer and to Azazel's plan. She'll remember that she's been getting close the Winchesters and trying to help Sam kill Lilith, but she has no idea *why.* Basically she'll be wondering what the hell her life has become that she's been playing nice with them, try to figure out what Lilith did to her to make her hate her, and have no idea what Sam/etc. are talking about when they're like "YOU BITCH YOU MADE ME FREE LUCIFER." Because she's just like "no … I really didn't. :/ I didn't even know that was possible."

ABOUT THE CHARACTER: Ruby was born sometime in the 1350s. She sold her soul to a demon named Tammi in exchange for the knowledge and skill to use witchcraft, and when she no longer wanted to follow Tammi, she was killed so her soul could be collected because she was no longer of any use to the demon. Hundreds upon hundreds of long years of Hell-time later, but probably not more than a hundred in Earth-time, after she'd spent every minute having her very humanity torn and carved and ripped out of her, she became a demon and agreed to serve Hell in exchange for making the pain stop. After spending the next few centuries basking in schadenfreude, she was propositioned by Azazel. He introduced the idea to her; do some time on Earth, get a free pass out of Hell, and do what she did best all with the end game of helping their own personal jesus break outta his cage. Now, demon Sunday school was all about learning about Lucifer and his fall and basically grilling in the fact that he was the demons' messiah in angel form. Ruby, as it so ( ... )

Being hand-picked by Azazel to head off his Apocalypse end-game makes her a pretty self-righteous bitch. She knows how good she is at what she does and not only is she proud of it, she's not afraid to flaunt and dangle the fact in front of other demons. She remarks frequently throughout the series about how she's different from other demons, makes derogatory remarks towards them and otherwise indicates a kind of overlording attitude about them. This is because she knows that she's been chosen to play the biggest role in Lucifer's rising and it gives her an ego that would make Uriel jealous. And it makes itself known when she's bold enough to tell Sam that she knows how to save Dean from Hell. She had so much confidence in the fact that Sam wouldn't figure out it was a lie, wouldn't go digging for himself and be able to prove her wrong, and so much confidence in the fact that she could continue to string him along for that long, that she didn't even bat an eye ( ... )

On the other end of vulnerable, and this is a piece of headcanon developed from extensive playing of the character, she hates when people are nice to her. People don't take kindly to demons, or if they do, it's so that they can use them (see: Sam Winchester) which is fine, but when someone is genuinely nice? Ruby shuts down and doesn't know how to handle it. People simply aren't nice to her. They're hella racist, surely, but never genuinely nice. The only reason she's been able to convince herself to do the terrible things she's done is by taking on the kind of devil may care attitude that lets her assume that all humans are inherently evil and will take that path if offered it. She's got such a twisted view on human morality that while she knows what she's doing is wrong and hates it, she thinks that it's the humans' fault for being so damn easy to trick. It's the only way she can avoid the immense self-loathing that should come with that kind of consistent screwing people over ( ... )

THIRD-PERSON WRITING SAMPLE: context is here…

Maybe if fewer people had treated Ruby like shit in her life, she'd be surprised by how Sylar was acting. She'd be surprised that despite that slight waver in his resolve that she saw -- and oh, yes, she saw it; you didn't learn to tug at heartstrings like Ruby did without knowing how to pick up on cues like that -- that he was shutting her down. Tearing her down, even.

But at this point, more than anything, she understood. The fact that he'd tolerated her this long was a God-given -- an admittedly poor choice of words -- miracle.

"Yeah, I get it." She seethed, stepping closer and glaring hard into his eyes as she proceeded to eliminate any semblance of personal space again. One blink and her eyes went black, because for some stupid reason she thought maybe if he saw it was her in there, he'd feel more inclined to trust her. To listen.

Nevermind that in a meatsuit, she looked like any other demon did to nearly every human in Creation.

"You don't want a big, scary, evil demon helping ( ... )
