"The Killing" -- Opinions?

Heard about it on a BBC news broadcast. Its Wikipedia entry (The Killing (Danish TV series)) heightened my interest, but unfortunately only its American doppelganger seems to be available on NetfixI may put it on my queue anyway, but does anyone know of a North American source for the original Danish series? No helpful answer, alas, but I'm interested in the answer too. We've been watching Borgen, the other show mentioned in that BBC piece, thanks to LinkTV on the Dish satellite network (and also online via linktv.org).

I see that the US version of The Killing was on AMC, which means that they'll likely repeat it at some point. Or someone else may pick it up for syndication on cable (or maybe even PBS). I remember that I watched at least a couple of episodes, but I don't remember much about them or why I stopped. IIRC it didn't suck.

Are either available on DVD?

It looks like the only source is Amazon. I try to avoid using Amazon whenever possible, and I was hoping to rent instead of buying, but who knows -- I may break down.

I did stumble upon an Ed Brubaker (whose writings I've liked) comparison of the original Danish series and the American remake, which although technically spoiler-free does go into details about certain plot points. Quick summary: the American version is okay, the Danish version is much, much better.

"Borgen" appears only to be available from Amazon.co.uk, with the usual region problems that entails. I know that region-ignorant DVD players are out there, but I don't own one and I'm not certain about shelling out the money for a show I might enjoy.
