It didn’t take long enough until Chinen saw Ryutaro walks inside his room, his smile gleamed at him right away in which a scowl was the response Chinen gave him.
“The nurse said your hand got swollen,” Ryutaro said but Chinen kept his lips sealed. “Let me see that-”
“No, go away,” Chinen replied in a cold tone. He pulled his infused hand close to him before Ryutaro manage to take a look at it. But he couldn’t ignore the quivering pain on his swollen hand, especially when he moved it around.
Then Ryutaro sat on the edge of his bed. “Chii, come on, let me see that. It feels hurt, deshou?” he persuaded, he knew Chinen is reigning in his pain. Carefully he protruded his hand to take Chinen’s infused one. Silently sighed in relief when the latter didn’t wave him off again this time.
“Do you know why your hand got swollen?” Ryutaro asked after he examined Chinen’s hand. “It’s because the circulation of the liquid into your vein doesn’t work properly. That’s why we need to change it to your other hand,” Ryutaro explained.
Chinen said no words but Ryutaro can see he doesn’t like the idea and his fear visibled on his face just as much Ryutaro knew how Chinen hates getting injected. “It’ll only hurt a little, I promise,” he assured. “So, let me change it, okay?”
“Do whatever you want,” Chinen shrugged coldly, act as if neither way was easy for him despite the fact he feels terribly scared right now. A single tear dropped from his eyes but he hurriedly wipe it with his hand.
Ryutaro patted gently Chinen’s head before preparing a new infuse set for him. He settled himself on the chair next to Chinen’s bed after finished taking off the previous infuse set. “You can hold onto me if you feel scare,” Ryutaro offered.
“No, I’m not scare,” Chinen denied. But he keeps on staring at the needle of the new infuse set, white-faced. So, Ryutaro hauled Chinen’s other hand onto his upper arm and let it slant there.
“Hey, Chii,” Ryutaro called him, distracting him from looking at the needle when he’s about to attach it to his hand. Chinen lift a gaze at him. “Do you still remember the children song we sang together on the phone? Do you want to sing it together again?” Ryutaro asked.
Seeing Chinen just staring at him with a questioning look, while his mind is in a complete mess with a mixed of fears and confusion, Ryutaro just smiled before he begins to sing on his own. But then he purposedly sing the wrong lyric as he started to pierce the needle through Chinen’s skin.
“No, that’s not the one,” Chinen unconsciously scolded him. Ryutaro felt Chinen squeezed his upper arm, but the latter’s attention seems fully focused to the mistakenly sang lyric.
“Ah, sou?” Ryutaro lightly responded while focusing himself to finish the new infuse set that now already attach to Chinen’s hand.
“It’s suppose to be ‘singing together with friends under the sun…’,” Chinen corrected, singing the right lyric. But his eyes blinked in confusion when Ryutaro suddenly directed his smile at him.
“So, you do remember it…,” Ryutaro said. Right then Chinen realized he just let himself being carried away. But as stubborn as he is, Chinen crunched up his face again, put on his cold attitude back.
“I-it’s a common children song! Everyone knows that song!” Chinen defended himself. Ryutaro’s light giggle can be heard after that.
“There, it’s done~” Ryutaro said. Chinen left astounded, he didn’t even notice when it happened. He looked down on his newly infused hand. But his expression turned sour instantly when he spotted the band-aids that covered around the newly infuse.
The rabbit band-aid.
“W-what is this?” Chinen asked half whispering, gaze fixed to the rabbit band-aids.
“What?” Ryutaro followed Chinen’s direction to the rabbit band-aids. “It’s your favourite rabbit band-aid,” Ryutaro answered with a rather serious and hopeful tone this time.
“No…,” Chinen said, head shaking. Hurts flashed again in his eyes. “No, it’s not. I don’t even remember ever wearing this in my entire life! And which part of ‘I don’t know you’ that you don’t get?! Can’t you please stop playing like we’re that close to each other and that we have history together?!”
“I don’t want to see you anymore,” Chinen suddenly stated. “And one more thing, take these all away with you, I don’t need them!” Chinen said, shoving the rabbit name tag along with the rabbit plushie to the petrified Ryutaro, also their photo album together that Ryutaro brought the other day.
“Chii…” This time around, Ryutaro no longer able to forced out a smile anymore. Each words Chinen threw at him, stabbed him sharply in disappointment.
“Even if you said we used to know each other, but I don’t want to remember it anymore…”
------------
After that day, it becomes even harder for Ryutaro to see Chinen. The only time he can see him is on his daily visit every morning with Chinen keeps looking away from him throughout the check up. Act as if he’s not there although they’re right next to each other.
Then on the rest of the time in a day, Chinen will intentionally surround himself with his families and relatives, also Keito…
“Ah, Morimoto-san, konnichiwa,” Keito politely greeted him.
It was lunch time, Ryutaro intended to accompany Chinen eats his lunch when he saw Keito already there, sitting next to the bed, feeding Chinen his lunch. And Ryutaro doesn’t even try to lie to himself that he’s okay seeing Keito there accompanying Chinen and feeding him, the two simple things he can’t even do since Chinen just had to keep rejecting him. He doesn’t even bother denying the scorching jealousy befell his heart.
“Konnichiwa,” Ryutaro answered just as polite. He averted his eyes to Chinen, but another disappointment struck him when Chinen gave off his cold glance and looking away from him. Again.
“I’ll just come back later, I guess-”
“Ne, Keito, in what time is your shift will be done for today?” Chinen cut in.
“Around 7,” Keito said.
“Can you accompany me again here to eat dinner later after work?” Chinen asked his friend again. Deliberately disregarding Ryutaro’s hurt look as he watched him talking to Keito.
“Y-yeah, sure,” Keito answered awkwardly. After answering Chinen’s smile at him, he slowly looked out to the door where Ryutaro stood before and found the said guy aren’t there anymore. Not realizing Chinen’s doing the same thing behind him, sadness danced in his eyes.
-----------
For how long has he been asleep, Chinen didn’t remember it. But he’s surely must’ve been asleep long enough, because when he woke up, the sky outside has turned dark already. A little smile tugged on his lips when he saw the snow falls sway in the air lightly through his hospital’s room window. Winter has always been his favourite season of the year.
Chinen then directed his eyes to the couch on the other corner of the room, hoping to find his mother. And a frown appeared on Chinen’s forehead when he found she’s not there.
He looked to the other side of his bed and got startled instantly once his eyes met Ryutaro’s instead. He’s currently sitting on the chair next to his bed, looking at him. His warm smile greeted him at once he turned at him.
“You’re awake,” Ryutaro said. “Do you need anything?” he softly asked then.
“What are you doing here?” Chinen asked back, nearly shouting himself out in panic, he even jerked up from his sleeping position. “Where is my mom?”
“She went home a few hours a go. But I’ll be staying with you tonight.”
“Why?” Chinen persistently kept asking.
“Your mom has been staying here and look after you for days already. She needs a proper rest too, Chii,” Ryutaro tried to give an understanding.
“But that doesn’t mean I need you staying over with me here!” Chinen retorted. “Get out,” Chinen required firmly.
“Chii-”
“Fine, I’ll call the nurse then!” Chinen said. He turned around, hand thrusted out to reach the nurse bell beside his bed. But before he succeeded grabing the bell, a familiar warmth dispersed through his body as Ryutaro enfolds him in a tight embrace from behind. One arm snake around Chinen’s neck while the other one grasped Chinen’s hand that’s still trying to grab the bell.
“What are you doing?! Let me go!” Chinen struggled to pry Ryutaro off of him. But Ryutaro’s arm around his neck tightened, he pulled him deeper into his hug. While he trapped their fingers between another.
“Let me go…” His voice turned into a mumble, tears formed on the corner of his eyes, but he’s still fighting to get out of Ryutaro’s embrace. Although his movements surely getting weaker as he gradually conceded into Ryutaro’s warmth that enveloped him.
Until eventually Chinen stopped moving. He just let his tears flow down his eyes.
“Last year…,” Ryutaro spoke up. “Last year when the snow falls, I held your hand just like this. Last year… I said to myself, I won’t ever let go of this hand…”
Then a pregnant silence overtook. They spent sometime in silence watching the snow fall outside the room’s window. “And I’m sorry I let it go…,” Ryutaro hardly continued his words. “I’ve hurted you in a way I shouldn’t… I’m sorry…” Tears trailed along Ryutaro’s cheek.
“I won’t force you to forgive me now. I’ll wait for you. I’ll wait forever if that’s what it’ll take. Just please don’t write me off from your life. Let me stay right here beside you…” Ryutaro whispered very near to Chinen’s ear, defenselessly pleading.
“Go away! I hate you!” Chinen attempted to sound stern in between his tears but bleakly failed because he can’t even control his own tears to stop falling.
“No, you love me… And I love you a whole lot more… A whole lot more…”
Chinen shook his head, the last time Ryutaro said he loves him, then came all of those hurtful words along with it. The last time he said he loves him, he wanted them to be apart. “Stop, please stop… I don’t want to hear it anymore…”
Ryutaro slowly turned Chinen to face him then he holds both of Chinen’s cheeks with his hands. He stared deeply into Chinen’s eyes that glistened by tears. “I love you, Chii… I do… I’m just scared that I’ll screw everything up because of that, then I’ll lose you forever… What should I do by then? I can’t live like that, I don’t want to live like that… But I ended up hurting you and pushing you away from me, I’m sorry,” he said.
“I can’t stand being without you…,” he uttered softly and laid their foreheads against another.
“Baka~ I can’t stand being without you too,” Chinen finally said. His hand slowly holds Ryutaro’s hand on his cheek.
“I’m sorry,” Ryutaro said. He wiped Chinen’s tears from his cheeks and stroke the fluffy cheeks lovingly, a little hesitantly leaning closer to Chinen’s face. “I won’t let you go again,” he whispered when they’re only a breath away, then gently captured Chinen’s lips with his own. “I love you, Chii,” he murmured in the kiss before closing his eyes and snuck his hand to the back of Chinen’s head, drowning him deeper into the kiss, pressing their bodies even closer to each other.
And so, there’s one thing that Ryutaro still cannot heal…
One thing… One scar and it’s the scar that bruised Chinen’s heart when Ryutaro left him just like that without saying anything after Chinen mustered all of his courage to make a confession to him. The scar that bruised Chinen’s heart for he left his feeling hanging that day…
The scar that bruised Chinen’s heart with each piece of wall Ryutaro built between them. That one scar that bruised his heart in a way the inclination in his heart to meet Ryutaro doesn’t even get lesser from day to day.
The scar that bruised his heart when Ryutaro’s presence slowly disappearing…
And on that very day, for once again, Ryutaro bruised a scar on Chinen’s heart… when he pushed him away.
But tonight, as confession was made. Hesitations, fears, regrets, and guilts washed away as they let their bodies melted in each other’s warmth, in the kiss they shared, and in the overflowing love they have for each other, Ryutaro finally able to heal it.
That scar he bruised on Chinen’s heart.
And once he saw Chinen’s smiling at him again after all of these dreaded times being not with each other and the so called edging away, when they broke their kiss, Ryutaro can’t even resist the urge inside him to give a chaste kisses on the velvety lips. Whispering ‘I love you’ over and over in between. Causing giggle fled from the latter.
“Ryu-chan, stop,” Chinen whined. “You do realize that you’re on a patient’s bed right now, don’t you?”
“I don’t care,” Ryutaro responded. He wrapped Chinen’s smaller frame securely in his embrace.
“Won’t the nurse scold you if they see us like this?”
“I can wake up before they came in the morning. But for now, let’s just stay like this,” he mumbled while kissing the top of Chinen’s head. Chinen nodded his head then snuggled onto Ryutaro’s chest, a smile made its way to his face when he saw Ryutaro still had the hamster name tag attached on his shirt, before then drifting off to sleep with Ryutaro’s soft voice saying ‘I love you’ to him.
