I can imagine if it's multiple phone calls, it could be an emergency in that case, but one call? One random number...I don't even pay attention to those.
Well, if its on my cell phone which is my primary number I look it up online...if I cant figure out who it was from that and its a local number or from an area I am sending out resumes/working with clients in then I call back and say something along the lines of "someone from here called me etc", depending on the intial greeting I get ie.."hello", or "insert business name here"
If its a non local number that I cant find any info about on the web...then no.
That's a weird thing to do? I thought most people did? I don't know, I'm still in college and my cell number is on my facebook account, so I get calls from people of all area codes all the time. I call them all back, and they turn out to be friends or classmates or whatever most of the time. People do it to me too, if I call and hang up without leaving a message. I just assumed that was a benefit of caller id?
I don't have it on my house phone, nor did my parents ever, so I don't know what I'd do there.
I think I'm with Megan. I usually only call back if it's called a bunch of times and they haven't left a message. But yeah, I figure that if it's really important, they'd leave a message.
I never call any of those random numbers back, nor do I pick up if I am home when the calls come in. My feeling is, if it wasn't important enough to leave a message then it's certainly not worth my time/effort to call them back.
To me, the benefit of Caller ID is knowing who's calling before you pick up the phone, so you can decide whether to pick up. I get repeated calls from 800 numbers, and one from a Verizon Wireless number with a Las Vegas area code, and I never pick them up.
I especially won't pick up cell phone calls unless I know who the person is, or if I can guess (such as when I'm going to the airport and I see a local area code around the time that the shuttle is supposed to come pick me up). I don't give my cell phone number out unless it's a friend/family or absolutely necessary, and I certainly would never post any of my phone numbers online where anyone could find them. But I've had stalkers before so that's just me.
Then again I am so NOT a phone person so that could be a big reason I don't bother.
That's my feeling. I have caller ID so I can avoid talking to random people trying to sell me stuff. If I don't recognize the number or have a really good idea of who it might be, I won't call it back.
