The Second Prophecy
Prompt: 004 Prophecy
Summary: Another day, another staff meeting, another prophecy
Early one morning at Hogwarts shortly after the students had left for the Summer, the teachers who were still present at the school gathered for a quiet, informal breakfast meeting. Professors Dumbledore, McGonagall and Vector were seated at a small, round table quietly chatting over their tea, as Professor Snape swept in looking pale and grumpy. He seated himself with a silent sneer in the second-to-last available seat and promptly ignored everything but the hot coffee that appeared on the table in front on him.
"Good morning, Severus," Albus greeted him genially.
The potions master glared at him.
"Why must you have these meetings so early in the day, Headmaster?" he snapped as he glared at his coffee. Dumbledore just smiled.
"It's the best time of the day," he replied. "Our minds are fresh and ready for new ideas."
Snape looked at him as if he were insane and then returned his gaze to his coffee with a grunt. Beside the headmaster, Minerva McGonagall shared a humorous glance with Albus and then smirked into her tea.
Further conversation was interrupted by the arrival Professor Trelawney. She fluttered in, her eyes wide and magnified behind her glasses, and settled quietly into the remaining seat beside Professor Snape. Severus sighed loudly and glared at the woman but she ignored him completely and focused on picking apart the small scone that had appeared on her plate.
The other professors looked at her oddly because Sybil Trelawney was usually full of gossip and visions first thing in the morning. But today, her face was pale and somber behind her huge glasses and she had hardly glanced around the room before she'd seated herself.
"Is something the matter, Sybil?" Albus asked in a gentle tone and she glanced at him reluctantly.
"No, nothing, Albus," she replied quietly as she picked up her teacup. "Just some...dreams. Nothing of import."
Beside her, Snape snorted but Dumbledore looked at her more intently. "Are you certain, Sybil?"
"Of course, Headmaster," she said as she glanced up with a strained smile. "I would certainly inform you if I had had any dreams of the Boy Who Lived."
Albus' eyebrows rose and he studied the teacher over his glasses. "And why would you think I was speaking of Mr. Harris?"
"Everything is about Mr. Harris," Severus stated caustically. "He slays Dark Lords, DADA teachers and apparently, basilisks. Who else would she think you were speaking of?"
"Now, Severus, you know we do not speak of Mr. Harris constantly," Professor McGonagall said sternly. "Just because *you* think everything revolves around that child doesn't mean we all do."
Snape scowled darkly at the other professor. "I do not think everything revolves around Harris!" he stated flatly. "You do more than enough of that for everyone, Minerva."
The transfiguration professor looked quite offended. "I do nothing of the sort!" she replied, her accent becoming a bit more pronounced.
"Woe."
About to contradict Minerva, the potions master instead spared a sneer for the woman beside him after she said such an odd thing.
"What?" he snapped at her.
But Sybil Trelawney just stared straight ahead, her eyes vague and her hands clenched around her teacup. When she spoke again, her voice echoed strangely in the small meeting room as though many voices were speaking together.
"WOE!"
Albus looked alarmed but the divination professor just continued to speak in her odd, deep voice.
"WOE UNTO THE DARK LORD. THE POWER HE KNOWS NOT, THE WHITE KNIGHT, HAS ARRIVED. EXPERIENCE AND INNOCENCE IN ONE HE WILL PROVE THE BETRAYED INNOCENT AND PROVE THE BETRAYOR GUILTY. THE LIGHT IS STRENGTHENED WITH KNOWLEDGE. THE DARK IS WEAKENED WITH REASON. WOE UNTO THE DARK LORD FOR THE WHITE KNIGHT HAS ARRIVED AND HE WILL SURELY KICK. HIS. ASS."
The last three words were stated grandly with an odd inflection of tones and a smug air of satisfaction.
A few moments later, Sybil sighed and took a sip of her cooling tea.
"I don't know why I thought you were asking about Mr. Harris, Albus," she sighed faintly. "I'm just not feeling myself this morning. I daresay a good strong cup of tea will help."
She set her cup down on the table and glanced around, finding herself the unexpected center of all eyes. The teachers across from her had their mouths hanging open and beside her, Professor Snape looked horrified.
Sybil blinked a few times as she glanced around. "What?"
