I don't ever remember any sort of nativity play, but I think sometimes the children would come out and sing a few songs (though that was really more of a Mother's Day or Easter sort of thing).
I am actually on my wards activity committee and a primary teacher :)
This is my 3rd christmas on the activities committee and we've done a few different things.
for the first year we just had a bunch of the girls in primary dress up like angels and the boys like shepards while we sang. Last year we had someone in the ward write us a play. At the end of the play with had a young couple dress up as Joseph and Mary with their baby as Baby Jesus.
this year we are having someone read the Nativity story while the primary kids act it out.
Plays and things are pretty common during ward activities, but not in Sacrament meeting.
Usually if the children do anything in Sacrament meeting, they just sing a few songs. More often, the ward choir and other musically gifted individuals put on a program of Christmas music either accompanied by narration reciting the Christmas story from the Bible and Book of Mormon, or 1 or 2 short talks about Christmas in between the music.
This. Every ward I have ever been in did just this, even when Christmas fell on a Sunday.
My husband is the ward choir director, and I'm fairly certain they told him they weren't allowed to do anything dressed up for it, it is still sacrament meeting. There can be a story narrative with different parts, but not dressing up and acting things out.
For the ward activity, you can do it, or a stake or ward fireside.
that's what I was used to before I moved here - the whole allowance thing is confusing too considering that the first three years I was here I lived in the ward that housed most of the employees of Church Offices for Western Europe (included a few members of the 70) and none of them objected so very confusing.
Our bishopric has been discussing sacrament meeting and what should be part of a sacrament meeting. I found a few links that should answer your questions hopefully

I should mention that ours are not during Sacrament meeting. We plan one night in December for a ward party.
We do have one Sunday where the primary sings during sacrament but our productions are usually done during the ward party.
