Interesting you should mention those - they're one of the very few English novel series that actually has been translated into Thai.

Graft, around here, seems to be part of the way of life. But it's not necessarily always viewed as graft - sometimes it's viewed as 'gifts' as 'graft' has a deeply negative connotation. 'Gifts' that just happen to grease the wheels and get better service. As foreigners, we attempt to tip the staff we deal with on a regular basis well (but not obscenely like some out-of-towners do) and it definitely helps. I'll be posting more about this later in a locked post.
