the radio is playing todd rundgren's "we've gotta get you a woman" in honor of his 60th birthday. which totally could go onto my list of guilty pleasures next time i'm on a guilty pleasures panel at wiscon, because it is NOT a feminist tune! but i do love todd rundgren's music--so infectious and singable ( Read more... )

Todd Rundgren is sort of a weird guy for me. He appeared in Keyboard Magazine back when I was renting a Korg DSS-1 sampler. The DSS-1 was a bizarre beast, and you could get some really cool and crazy sounds out of it. And TR in this interview was talking about how much he loved it. However, I had no idea who he was other than that he was famous and slightly before my time. (In actuality, I knew a bunch of his songs, but just didn't know they were by him.) So I had this constructed image of him as this sort of experimental electronica synth guy based on the fact that he loved this keyboard. Of course, that image is completely wrong for him, but I've never been able to sort of properly rewrite the memory banks, so I continue to just have this sort of, "There's something wrong with this perception," blank where his name is, and it seems to want to just stay kind of unresolved that way.

i think that the thing about todd is that he is so many different types of musician. at the concert we went to, he sang a number from a musical theater show that he was writing--i don't know if it ever got produced but as you can imagine, it was very different! so while he is not primarily an experimental electronica synth guy, i imagine that's a part of him.
