this is the second book that i've read by lisa goldstein, the first being dark cities underground. i'd compare it more with pamela dean's tam lin than that book, though. (i'd compare dark cities underground with neil gaiman's neverwhere for location, though not tone--i think that fantasies that take place in part in subway systems are getting to ( Read more... )

I liked this just fine, and like you I found it very readable, but in the end, I was disappointed, because I go to Lisa (Goldstein) for complexity and nuance, and this was just a very well-done, completely predictable, urban fantasy. I'm not sorry I read it, but I wanted more from it than she felt like giving (which is not her fault).

For brilliant books by her, read The Dream Years or Tourists. And almost all of them are good.
