listening to sports columnists panning the olympics and pointing out how no one is watching is starting to drive me nuts. i have watched a huge amount of olympic coverage, which i realize is not what the average american is doing, but aside from while i'm at work, i pretty much have it on whenever i'm able

The commentator explained that the International Olympic Committee waives the qualifying times for those countries that don’t indulge in the competitive sports played during the Olympics. For example, Equatorial Guinea does not have swimming competitions. One reason is that the good people there don’t know how to swim. Therefore, the IOC allows anyone from there to compete in Olympic swimming without their first having to achieve the rather stiff qualifying times.
Though speaking of which, does anyone else in the world do curling besides Canadians?!

re: curling, not that i've heard of. my brother and i were toying with the idea of doing curling and figure skating at the same time. as in, the jumps the figure skaters did weren't for show so much as to avoid sliding obstacles coming across the ice. almost like dodgeball, as opposed to a set routine with timed jumps, jumps to avoid sliding rocks, with spins if you can manage to earn bonus points. points go to the other team if they hit your skater with their curling stones...no hitting with brooms allowed.
