Somebody on my Twitter feed forwarded this piece from i09. I hate i09 and I hate linking to the Lord Clickbaits over there even more so but in this instance I feel like I have to in order to make my point

This is my problem w/ Abrams, he smells like a fanboy. Although I've seen specials where he's talked about Anakin's character and the prequels, the dude is all about nostalgia - HE didn't like the script that was presented to him because it focused on a new generation of young characters w/putting the older original trio in the background. So instead he roped in Kasdan and they rushed through creating a brand new script, which entailed all new casting for new characters, this was after the studio already went hunting for new young people

This is one of the reasons I'm so unenthused by the idea of "Star Wars" films without George Lucas actually writing, directing or producing them. What I've enjoyed most about SW over the years is that it's been perhaps the biggest piece of mainstream blockbuster entertainment that was still being run by a single creative mind. Even when other writers and directors were brought in for ESB, ROTJ and "The Clone Wars", they kept close to the story, characters and worlds Lucas created. Now, practicaly the first news we heard about Abrams' stewardship was that he was tossing out the script that Lucas had a strong hand in so he could rewrite it to his liking. My biggest fear is that this is how SW is going to turn into just the type of soulless corporate mindsuck that critics always accused it of being in the old days, just so aging fanboys and stuck-up movie geek hipsters can get their nostalgia on

That's pretty much been my own conviction from the beginning. I suppose that, having drifted away from a previous "follow-up storyline" in the novels, it just doesn't feel as vital to me to "know what happens next" as it was to "know what had happened."
At the same time, though, as much as I'd like to imagine certain possibilities leading to at least a few people looking at the first six movies as more of a whole, it's just as possible that a lot of people might wind up clinging to their uncompromising yet somehow ineffably shallow vision of what the old movies wound up for them...

If I don't, I'll just tell myself it wasn't GL's vision and ::shrug:: ignore them.
