Yaoi is romance novels for people who say they hate romance novels.

I don't agree that the genre is so very conservative: if you look at yaoi from ten years ago versus yaoi now, the art trends have changed vastly, and most authors (note that by "most" I mean "the ones I like") have moved on from the "stereotypical weepy girl with a penis" character concept and are gradually bridging out into trying new ideas.

Probably, for me, the thing you have to keep in mind is that most yaoi authors will write/draw basically the same type of story over and over again. Therefore, if you find an author with a story you like, you can just sort of stick to them. (There are some notable exceptions, of which Yamane Ayano is one, I love, like, Crimson Spell but can't stand Viewfinder.)

If you want subversive, in Haru wo Daiteita there is occasional sexual role reversal. Also, uh... Koi ga Bokura wo Yurusu Hani! By Motoni Modoru! (Which is the best pseudonym ever.)

My project on yaoi argued that yaoi allows women to subvert the tradition of the hitherto patriarchal pornography industry by taking men as objects of sexuality instead, while still reflecting a (familiar) heterosexual hierarchy.

'course, half the stuff in it is probably bull 'cos I personally feel that most women like yaoi for the pretty boys and the porn but. You can read it if you like o_o
