So.

Robin Hobb's rant about fic.

.... What the fuck?I will say if I ever get something original published it would be stupid of me to howl if there's fic about it. I will also say that I'd probably have to let the word go out that Nobody Tells Me About It, I Don't Ask About It ( Read more... )

fanfic, rants

Hoo boy. I think... I'm not going to say most of it because you don't need to have to wade through it. But, too many generalisations. J-fandom is a little different to western novel fandom, firstly because of the sheer prevalence of dj and attitudes thereto, and secondly because they're primarily visual media, which automatically differentiates them from fanfic.

I would never consider going against an author's wishes on the subject of fic. That's just... disrespectful.

I'm a fan, Ms Hobb. Treat me right and I will buy out the goddamn store.

*cackles madly* Oh man, not only do I agree with you utterly--and not only have I said much the same things myself!--but I love that quote and would like to see it on a t-shirt. I would wear that t-shirt. I would wear it proudly.

(On a side-note, I've actually had people write fanfics for my unpublished origfics, and while it weirded me out that anybody would want to write fanfics for my fics, it was insanely flattering. Insanely flattering. And made me want to write more. So, uh, "so there." *grins*)

Yeah. I'm convinced that she just doesn't GET the fanfic mindset. I mean, it seems like she thinks we're stupid or something and that those who read fanfic can't tell that someone's fic isn't canon. I mean, if I read a crappy DNAngel fic, I don't think that that's canon and that I don't want to see or buy DNAngel because it must be crappy too. I blame the fic author, not the canon.

And I'm the same way. I've so gotten into things BECAUSE I read fanfiction, and I don't think she gets that, either.

It just irks me how she automatically assumes that everyone who writes fanfic wants to become a professional writer. Professional fiction writer, at that. I've known fanficcers who want to turn professional, but even more who have no intention of doing that in the first place. One of my best friends is a fanficcer who's an academic -- she's always said that she has no interest in being a professional writer, and anything of hers that gets published would be her academic work. While I've vaguely dabbled in writing original fiction, right now I'm only interested in professionally writing non-fiction -- and that probably won't change for a long time yet.
