I tend to use DPNs as cable needles (in a pinch!), but I've been eyeing these for a while http://www.knitpicks.com/accessories/Options_Harmony_Wood_Cable_Knitting_Needles__D90347.html

Maybe that'll work for you?

...they sell the cable needles you are describing at Walmart and Michaels. I think Boye makes them.

Ugh I am still in Ontario till Wednesday but I feel ready to go home. WHY BRAIN WHY. I might just blame the super lameness of Toronto and call it a day.

yes but getting to Michaels involves like, three buses and stupidity and I have a cold. >_< Soooo lame, there's like three stores within reasonable distance of me and none of them have the type I want.

Glove size DPNS, which are 5" I think instead of the normal 8" or something like that, work awesome as cable needles. If the DPNs are wood, they are generally grippy enough that stitches don't slide. Or you can try cabling without a needle. There is this method: http://media.wendyknits.net/knit/leftcable.htm or this one: http://www.grumperina.com/leftcable.htm
