That... was fucking magnificent. I really don't have anything else to call it, except maybe "wow". And I'm a massive Diane Duane fan too (I mean, glass spiders and Horta ensigns? XD)
This is the best Star Trek story I've ever read. I could say something massively insulting about how "hey, it's not even slash and I loved it!" but honestly, you've written a story that's... beyond slash or het or pairings of any kind, if that makes sense? What I mean is that the characters are so real, more vivid than I've ever read before, and romance isn't what this story is about. It's about people, not pairs.
You've created an incredibly layered and fascinating and funny original character, and when I read the line that Sakel had been on Vulcan when it died, I started crying. Jim's reaction was absolutely heartbreaking -- his first thought of what Sakel would say about grief, and then getting up and doing his job again.
The humor that you put into this was likewise pure genius; there's far too many parts that made me laugh for me to count. But the thing that I loved most is that Kirk would make some ridicutarded and hysterical comment or observation, and then follow it up with something like this:

Yes, and it adds nuances to Kirk's relationship with Older Spock - with this story Older Spock becomes an echo of somebody Kirk already loves, and the easy trust Kirk shows in him is... fascinating? Not quite the right word I'm looking for here.
So, I am a total chronic lurker, but I had to comment on this. Because this fic was awesome, and it made me cry, and it made me wish that all Star Trek fics I read were this good. Because really, I loved the format, and the little bits about the crew of the Kelvin through time, and I loved Kirk as a linguistics genius, because you get all these hints in the movie of how much he's a genius, but most fics never even touch on it. This was totally awesome, and I'm super glad I was still awake when you posted it :P
Hey, I know you. How is it that we always end up in the same fandoms and yet we never realize it until much later? Maybe that's a sign that we should talk more. XD
