Let's pretend for a second that you are a theology teacher. You have to assign summer reading for the freshmen, who are becoming sophomores. They just finished learning Hebrew Scriptures and they are going to take Christology (Gospels and Letters of Paul) and Church History. They are also switching Catholic attitudes, from an admittedly liberal ( Read more... )

I vote for Tuck Everlasting just 'cause it rocks, but I see how it is not so much about Christianity.

Oh pffft. Who cares if they have to read screwtape letters? Perelandra freaking OWNED. C.S. Lewis is an author worthy of duality on lists.

I kind of agree with John. Most non-CS Lewis Christianity books are somewhat lacking in one way or another. Perelandra and Screwtape are both excellent - I actually enjoyed the sequels to Perelandra more, but you have to start somewhere. Although if this book is partly to be read for enjoyment/literary value and not specifically Christianity, Madeleine L'Engle's "A Wrinkle in Time" had some good spiritual themes. I think it would be better than "Tuck Everlasting" in this case anyways ( ... )

Dude ooch you sound all businesslike. Get back home so we can start racing to cars and playing video games. Of course, it might just be that I don't really know much about the other books, and thus have no idea what you're talking about...

yes, i have been thinking about this. i am obsessed with books. i think the lion the witch and the wardrobe is pretty christian without being heavy (they crucify a lion and he comes back to life, c'mon), and the madeleine l'engle books were also pretty darn christian while still a story (i randomly assumed you wanted stories but now i realize you don't). also 'buffy the vampire slayer' is a very catholic themed show no matter what people argue, with much redemption and sinning involved, and the episode 'the gift' in season 5 is a buffy=jesus where she literally dies to save the world (and then is resurrected in season 6), and gosh knows i think tv shows are just as good as books :). and there's epsidodes in season 3? with angel finding redepmtion, particularly the xmas one where it snows...
can 'hogfather' (is that its name?) by terry pratchett count cuz it's about christmas and wicked cool?

Alas, I can't use TV shows. Or probably Terry Pratchett cause the sophomore teacher is pretty conservative.

I decided to go with a lesser-known Madeleine L'Engle book called "Circle of Quiet."
