Have you read the book Wicked? I read it years ago and have been meaning to reread it. I've heard from some people that the musical waters down and/or changes a lot of the interesting thought-provoking stuff that's in the book.
I have not yet read the book, but I can attest to the musical being very thought provoking. Except, of course, no one seems to get it. It's an excellent show, and I will gladly second the recommendation to see it if possible. Unfortunately, like most literature, the vast majority of people really just miss the point.

Well, there's a lot more to the show than political allegory.
It's about friendship and testing your perceptions of what is true, what beauty is, what love is, it's about the nature/nurture debate, the reasons for cruelty, power dynamics, and emotions.
But sometimes people just want to see it because they like the Wizard of Oz (like the kids), and some people want to see it for the effects, some people just want to hear the other side of the story.
