I was doing the visitation of the dead this evening, seeing family members that I don't know very well (if at all) and just generally meeting and greeting. The fanfare surrounding a death in the Southern US is a thing to behold. Food is a requirement. Fried pie? Yes, I think that must be a southern thing. Worst I've ever had was chocolate-covered cheesecake, on a stick, at a Rennaisance Faire, and I'm pretty sure they didn't actually have those in the middle ages...

Your co-worker is setting himself up to be exploited. If you weren't a better person, I'd recommend you ask to borrow some of his things yourself.
