Love Sick

Nichkhun curses silently to himself as he reads his schedule for the week that Manager Minjae gave him. Recordings and variety shows back to back, he wouldn’t be surprised if he slept no more than two hours a night this week. He sighs, cursing his own popularity. Out of all the 2PM members, lately it seems as if he is the busiest of them all. With their Again and Again promotions done, they are all doing solo activities, and Nichkhun’s schedule just refuses to give him a break.

His eyes widen as he takes in what is written at the bottom of the paper.

Next week - Thailand for promotions

He spins around, jaw dropping, “Minjae hyung, I’m going to Thailand next week?”

Minjae smiles at him. “Yeah, I just found out too. It’s kind of short notice, but the promotion will be great for the upcoming album.”

“Are the rest of the members going?”

Minjae shakes his head. “Nah, just you. Don’t worry about it. It’s only a couple of shows, some interviews here and there. No big deal.”

Nichkhun makes a face, “Just me? What about the rest of the members?”

Minjae frowns, “Well, they all have their own activities. And I think Junsu was talking about going back to Daegu for a week or so. There’s no one to accompany you. Don’t worry though, you know Thailand loves you. The rest of the members would just feel awkward, not being able to speak the language and all that.”

Nichkhun nods dejectedly. “Thanks, hyung.” He mumbles before heading to the van, ready to finally head back to the dorm.

This is so typical. None of the other members get shipped to another country to do promotions. As much as he likes Thailand, going there is more exhausting than anything else. Junsu gets to go home for a week? Nichkhun can’t even remember the last time he had gone back to the states to see his parents.

Nichkhun glances at his watch. 3:10 AM. He groans, throwing his head back against the headrest. He has to be up by 8:00 AM tomorrow, or is that today? He closes his eyes, wanting nothing more than to pass out in his bed.

“Come on, Khun hyung! Let’s go out for lunch!” Wooyoung excitedly grabs his arm, pulling him up.

“Wooyoung, we’re in the middle of a recording.” Nichkhun looks around the Star King set, as if the other man knows something that he’s missing.

“I know that, but we have an hour for lunch and I’m tired of eating lunch boxes!”

Nichkhun frowns at his boyfriend. “It’s only an hour. Do you really want to go out?”

Wooyoung nods frantically. “We haven’t done anything together in ages! This might be our only opportunity!” He makes a cute face that he knows Nichkhun just can’t resist. “Please… come on, hyung! It’ll be fun!”

Nichkhun sighs, finally giving in. “Okay, fine.”

Wooyoung breaks out in a smile, and he shoves a hat onto Nichkhun’s head. “Let’s go! I already told manager hyung!”

“How did you know I would say yes?” Nichkhun asks in surprise.

“Because I know you can’t resist me.” Wooyoung smiles coyly.

Nichkhun rolls his eyes, but the younger man’s smile is contagious and he can’t help but be grateful to get away from people and cameras, even if it’s only for a little while.

“There’s a really good restaurant two blocks down. You’ll like it. Fast service too!” Wooyoung is practically skipping.

Nichkhun stares at him, wondering how anyone could be so hyper on four hours of sleep. Wooyoung had always been a special case.

They pass a street stand selling various toys and tourist souvenirs. Of course, something has to catch Wooyoung’s eye.

“Oooooh, look at this hyung!” Wooyoung picks up what looks like a kite without a string. “Isn’t it pretty?” He asks, noting the swirls of purple and the intricate design of the long tail.

Nichkhun frowns. “What is it?”

“It’s a kite!” Wooyoung says as if it’s the most obvious thing in the world.

“Are you sure about that? Where’s the string?”

Wooyoung’s smile drops slightly. “Maybe it fell off?” He manages weakly.

Nichkhun rolls his eyes, his stomach growling loudly.

Wooyoung plays with the tail, still examining the object in his hands. “This reminds me of something my grandmother gave me when I was a kid. She said that you’re supposed to throw it up into a tree, and get it caught on a branch. Then you get to make a wish, and the higher the branch, the greater the chance that your wish will come true.”

Nichkhun blinks. “You believe that?”

Wooyoung hits his arm playfully. “My wish came true!”

“What did you wish for?” Nichkhun asks disbelievingly.

Wooyoung frowns, “I don’t remember. It was a long time ago. But I’m sure it was something good.”

“Sounds like a waste of time and money to me.”

Wooyoung sets the kite back down on the stand. “You are no fun.”

Nichkhun smiles, throwing his arm around the smaller man’s waist. “Come on, let’s go eat. We’re going to run out of time. Manager hyung will yell at us again.”

~*~

Nichkhun frowns at his Korean workbook. Why are there doodles of cats in the margin of every page?

Taecyeon.

How is he supposed to improve his Korean when he can barely read what’s in the book without scribbles all over the pages? He lifts his head at the sound of laughter coming from the kitchen.

“You pig! Stop eating everything in sight!” Junho yells at Chansung.

Chansung looks up innocently.

At his distraction, Taecyeon steals the bag of mangos from Chansung’s hands. He quickly runs to hide behind their leader, which just looks weird seeing how Taecyeon has half a foot of height on him. Chansung and Taecyeon begin a battle around Jaebeom, who does not look happy to be caught between the two giants.

Wooyoung laughs from the corner, enjoying the scene.

Nichkhun frowns, his headache getting worse just looking at them fool around. He glances out the window just as a clash of thunder hits. The lightening that follows does nothing to help his migraine. He turns back to his book, but it’s no more than a minute later that a loud crash diverts his attention again.

Taecyeon had bumped into Junho, causing him to fall from his stool, making Wooyoung laugh even harder. Chansung finally picks up the fallen bag of mangos which now Jaebeom is trying to wrestle from him and Junho complains that no one cares that his hip now hurts from the fall.

Nichkhun grits his teeth. How is it that he lives with a bunch of loud juvenile delinquents who cannot give him a moment of quiet? He rubs his temple with one hand. All of this over a single bag of dried mangos. He can’t take it anymore. He jumps to his feet, resisting the urge to throw his workbook at them.

“Shut up, shut up, just shut up!” He screams at them.

They freeze. Taecyeon’s hand fisting Chansung’s shirt and Junho halfway about to jump on Jaebeom’s back. Wooyoung stares at him in horror. It would have been a comical sight had he not been so pissed off. He stomps off to his room, slamming the door loudly behind him.

He collapses into his chair. Finally, peace and quiet. He had not meant to lose his temper like that, but being sleep-deprived and exhausted, he feels that he has a legitimate excuse.

Nichkhun hears the door creak open slowly and he knows that it’s Wooyoung.

“Khun hyung?” The other man whispers.

Nichkhun turns to glare at him.

Wooyoung bites his lip. “Are you okay?”

“I have a headache and I just want some quiet so I can learn some goddamn Korean! But you children are making that very difficult for me!” He slams the book onto his desk in frustration. A small part of him feels bad for taking his anger out on his boyfriend but he does his best to ignore it.

Wooyoung jumps at the bang his desk makes. “I’ll tell the guys to be quiet.” He says softly. “Are you sure you’re okay, hyung?”

“I’m tired.” Nichkhun grits through his teeth.

Wooyoung nods. “It seems none of us have gotten much sleep lately.”

Nichkhun rolls his eyes are the other man’s words. “How many schedules did you have today?”

Wooyoung blinks at him. “One.” He says softly.

“One. Yes, well, I had three. So don’t talk to me about tired.” He scoffs. “You know, I wish I could goof around like the rest of you, but management doesn’t give me a break. I don’t get to go home like Junsu. I don’t get a break! Do you know what I get?” He glares at Wooyoung, who’s practically cowering by the door.

Wooyoung shakes his head apprehensively.

“I get to hop on a plane at 8:00 in the morning and go to Thailand! Because the only non-Korean member of this band has to promote our Korean music!” He reaches around his desk, grabbing a handful of paper and waves them around. “Do you know what this is, Wooyoung?”

Wooyoung shakes his head again.

“Lyrics, for our next song. Guess who has to practice them weeks in advanced? The only non-Korean guy!” He slams the papers back on his desk. “And I can’t even practice this goddamn language because Taecyeon keeps drawing in my workbooks!”

“Do you want help?” Wooyoung asks meekly.

“No. I want peace and I want quiet.” Nichkhun hisses. “I want to be left alone.”

“But you’re leaving tomorrow, I wanted to spend- ”

“No!” Nichkhun yells. “I want to be left alone!”

“Okay okay.” Wooyoung whispers before turning to leave quickly. He spares a glance back. “I’m sorry,” he murmurs, not even knowing what he’s really sorry for.

Nickhun sighs when the door is closed, almost immediately feeling bad for yelling at Wooyoung. He definitely did not deserve that. And since he’s leaving early in the morning, he mostly like will not have a chance to apologize. He lets his head drop to the desk, groaning and mumbling to himself.

He lifts his head and reaches for his workbook again.

Damnit, I shouldn’t have yelled at him…

~*~

Nichkhun jerks awake when he feels someone shaking him. He looks up to see Jaebeom looking at him in concern. Nichkhun looks around; he’s still in his room. He must have fallen asleep at his desk.

“Hey, man you feeling okay?” Jaebeom asks in English.

Nichkhun nods, rubbing his eyes. His headache was gone. “Yeah, I’m sorry about earlier. I didn’t mean to yell at you guys.”

“It’s fine, man. Don’t worry about it. Wooyoung said you weren’t feeling well.”

“I feel fine now. Where is Wooyoung? I really have to apologize to him.”

Jaebeom shakes his head. “I don’t know where he is. He left right after you yelled at him, said he had something important to do. I haven’t seen him since.”

Nichkhun glances at the clock on his desk. It was 2:00 in the morning. “He’s been gone for four hours?”

Jaebeom nods. “I tried calling his cell phone, then I found out he left it in the kitchen.” He sighs. “I don’t know what he could be doing in the middle of the night but it is storming out there.”

Nichkhun stands and goes to look out the window. Peaking through the curtain, he grimaces, seeing that the storm had not let up in the past few hours. “Where could he be?” He murmurs to himself.

“Well, hopefully he’ll be back soon because I’m tired as fuck.” Jaebeom walks toward the door. “Hey, get some sleep. You’ve got an early flight tomorrow. Wooyoung’s a grown man, I’m sure he can take care of himself.”

Nichkhun barely hears him. He’s still looking out the window, guilt already sinking in harshly. Just because he was upset, it’s no reason to take it out on Wooyoung. He bites his lip. Where the hell could he be in the middle of the night during a thunderstorm?

He ends up spending the next half hour pacing around his room, glancing at the clock every three minutes. He groans in frustration. Finally throwing on a pair of boots and a raincoat, he grabs an umbrella and leaves to look for the other man.

Stepping into the rain, he immediately pulls his coat tighter around himself. The rain gets into his eyes, blurring his vision. The umbrella really doesn’t help much in a storm like this, he thinks bitterly. He looks left and right, realizing he doesn’t have a clue where to look first.

He throws caution to the wind and starts walking right, half running, ignoring the cold water as it soaks his pants and socks. The streets are empty, as to be expected. He passes a small park about four blocks from their dorm. He squints in the dim light of the streetlamps. A small figure was moving in the distance.

His eyes widen as he gets closer. It was Wooyoung.

Nichkhun starts running, hand coming up to wipe rain from his face. “Wooyoung!” He screams. But the wind carries away his voice.

Wooyoung was standing under the largest tree in the park. Something falls from above him and he runs forward to pick it up. Nichkhun sees him throw it up, and then run forward as it falls down again.

“Wooyoung!” He yells again.

The younger man turns around in surprise. Nichkhun runs up to him, using the umbrella to cover them both.

“Hyung! What are you doing out here?”

Nichkhun pauses to catch his breath. “What the hell are you doing out here?” His own voice sounds angry to his ears. He looks at the other man, noticing that he’s only wearing a long sleeve shirt under a t-shirt. It was hard to see him with the little light from the park. Are his lips blue?

Wooyoung holds his hands up.

Nichkhun’s face blanks as he sees the kite from the street stand. It dawns on him. “Wooyoung…”

“I’m going to get it up there, hyung!” He gives Nichkhun a smile before turning.

Nichkhun grabs his arm before he can go very far. “Wooyoung, this is stupid! It’s pouring rain out here. You’re never going to get it up in that tree!”

“I will!” Wooyoung insists. “I’ve almost got it.” He breaks free from the other man’s grasp.

Exasperated, Nichkhun watches as Wooyoung tries again and again to throw the kite into the tree. “Wooyoung…” He tries. He gives up as he sees the determination on Wooyoung’s face. He watches worriedly as Wooyoung runs forward to grab the fallen kite and throws it again. This time it doesn’t fall back down.

Nichkhun looks up to see the kite stuck in one of the tall branches. The long tail waves back and forth in the wind.

Wooyoung turns to him with a smile on his face. He runs back to him, under the cover of the umbrella. “I told you I could get it, hyung!”

“Wooyoung, why have you been out here for four hours trying to get a stupid kite into a tree?” He asks furiously.

“Because now my wish will come true. I wished that you wouldn’t have to work so hard all the time,” Wooyoung says softly. “Now you’ll finally get a break.”

The anger disappears as Nichkhun stares at him in shock. “You did this for me?” He asked softly.

Wooyoung nods, a big smile on his face. “You were so upset. I don’t like seeing you upset.”

Nichkhun feels like crying as he stares at the man in front of him. He blinks his eyes as water from his hair drips into them, obscuring his vision. He quickly wraps his arms around the other man, pulling him into a tight hug. “Wooyoung, I’m sorry. I’m so sorry.” He feels like a hundred emotions are trying to come out of him at the same time.

“What are you sorry for, hyung?” Wooyoung asks, his voice muffled by Nichkhun’s coat.

“I’m sorry I yelled at you, I’m so sorry. I’ll never do it again. I didn’t mean to get mad at you.” Nichkhun holds him even tighter, so grateful that he had a boyfriend like Wooyoung. “I love you, Wooyoung.”

“I love you, too, hyung.” Wooyoung’s voice sounds faint in his ears. Is the storm getting louder?

Nichkhun loosens his grip on the smaller man, stepping back slightly. “Woo?”

He finally feels Wooyoung shaking in his arms. He’s trembling. Nichkhun’s hand is gripping his arm. Through the thin sleeve, he feels as cold as ice. He looks at the younger man’s face. Wooyoung’s eyes are half-lidded and he’s looking at him like he’s not really seeing him. Frantically, Nichkhun raises his hand to Wooyoung’s forehead. Though wet from the cold rain, there’s no mistaking the heat coming from him. He could've gotten hypothermia for being out here for so long.

“Wooyoung, you’re really hot.” There was a hint of fear in his voice.

“Hm…” Wooyoung’s eyes slip close and he teeters a bit before his knees give out and he’s falling forward into Nichkhun’s arms.

Nichkhun catches him. He looks at the man in his arms in shock. He quickly throws down the umbrella, bending down and with an arm behind his knees, lifts him up gently. He heads back to the dorm as fast as he can, thankful that it’s close.

~*~

Wooyoung slowly opens his eyes. The first thing he sees is Nichkhun’s concerned face watching him.

“Hey,” his voice is hoarse.

Nichkhun reaches for a glass of water on his desk. “Here,” he says gently, helping Wooyoung drink.

“Were you watching me sleep, hyung?” Wooyoung asks softly, a small smile on his face.

“I was worried about you. You know, when you spend five hours in the pouring rain without a jacket you’re pretty much bound to get sick. You probably have pneumonia,” he grumbles.

“Hm…” Wooyoung closes his eyes.

Nichkhun places his hand on the other man’s forehead. “Your fever’s gone down mostly. That’s a good thing.”

Wooyoung opens his eyes again, glancing at the window. Bright sunlight was coming through the blinds. “Shouldn’t you be in Thailand?” He asks softly.

“I told Minjae hyung I wasn’t going. With you being sick and all, all the other guys are busy with their schedules, who’s going to take care of you, huh?”

Wooyoung stared at him, a smile slowing spreading across his face. He laughs softly.

“What’s so funny?” Nichkhun demands, “Minjae hyung yelling at me for an hour about my responsibilities?”

“No,” Wooyoung says softly. “My wish came true. You got a break. And you get to spend it with me.”

Nichkhun smiles too. “Yeah, it’s all thanks to you.” He leans forward to place a soft kiss on the younger man’s lips. He pulls back and his smile disappears. “You listen to me though, I swear, if you ever do something so stupid and make me worry about you again, I will never forgive you. Do you understand me?”

Wooyoung nods, a small smile still on his face. “You were worried about me,” he says in a giddy voice.

“Of course I was worried about you,” Nichkhun says, motioning the other man to scoot over so he can slide under the sheets. “But what you did was stupid. And now you’re sick because of it.”

“I’m love sick,” Wooyoung says with a soft laugh.

Nichkhun rolls his eyes, “No, you’re actually just sick,” he jokes.

Wooyoung curls up next to the older man, laying his head on his shoulder. He closes his eyes, letting a content smile spread across his face.

“Thank you, Wooyoung.” Nichkhun whispers.

Wooyoung nods, already half-asleep.

Nichkhun smiles too, his arm wrapping itself around Wooyoung’s waist, pulling him closer. He was definitely going to enjoy his break. He’d rather a break with Wooyoung than go to Daegu any day.
