"I love you too! Bye"
"No, you don't", ran the refrain in her mind as she hung up the phone. "No, you don't".
Three little words, so differing in their nuances, and so powerful in their capacity to hurt. How fucking pathetic could she get, wanting those words to mean more than "Hey buddy, I need someone to unload on and do me some favors, so be nice and I'll throw you a crumb" type of a response.
No, she was being unfair in her hurt. It did mean more than that, and she knew Olivia loved her as a friend, but Casey wanted so much more. They had clashed from the moment they met, and Casey had simultaneously wanted to show her up and win her approval. The ghost of Alex Cabot had a dampening effect on her initial attempts at friendly overtures. But she hadn't given up. She was stubborn like that, a trait that had been honed growing up in a testosterone laden family. She had counted each grudging inch of acceptance by Olivia as a major victory. Never mind that she'd come to grief many times backing the squad, backing HER. Casey had waited patiently, and just when she thought that she had gained Olivia's trust and confidence, Alex resurfaced. That put paid to any illusions she had harbored then, but she had still covered for Olivia when she had taken Connors' file.
She waited patiently again for Olivia to get over the heartache of Alex's reentry into the WPP. And that patience had turned into a double edged sword. She did gain her confidence, but had turned into a buddy. Someone who was there for the confessionals, but not for the play. Casey could have done without having to listen to Olivia talk about Alex, or about the assorted mindless dates that she had gone on in an effort to forget Alex. But she still smiled, and nodded, and listened and sympathized, and felt the hurt going deeper. Now each day that she left her feelings unspoken widened the chasm, and she was beginning to wish that she could avoid Olivia. Casey wasn't sure how much longer she could maintain the facade.
It was easy to say those three little words under the cover of friendship, and so hard, so very hard to accept them back in the same vein.
"I love you too! Bye"
"No, you don't", she buried her face in her hands. "No, you don't".
