The sensation of Sheppard's lips pressing against the shell of his ear is too brief to really mean anything, and yet Rodney's heart is pounding like he's just won a run for his life instead of a stupid card game.

oooh I'm all tingly now!

Oh boys. *hugs* I don't know who I feel worse for! I love that John ordered Rodney to stop watching, And that Rodney did it, not because he wanted to, but because it was the only thing the John could control. *love the boys*

And I didn't blink. *g*

Needless to say, John gets dragged off to the infirmary as soon as they walk through the gate, along with Ronon because he's an idiot and incapable of sitting tight. They follow Sam up to her office to debrief, but mostly it's Teyla's voice, calm but impossible to translate into meaningful words as he paces back and forth, snapping his fingers and staring through glass walls at splashes of blood on the gateroom floor that no one has had time to clean up.

"Yes?" His name, at least, still penetrates. "Yes, what?"

"You did good," Sam tells him, and he stares at her incredulously.

"You were very brave," Teyla adds, and his shoulders hunch involuntarily so the words can slide off him, like water and duck's backs.

"I didn't do anything," he says, voice still high and tight, and Sam smiles a little, her eyes kind.

"You didn't panic, McKay."

His fists clench. It seems unjust that this should be counted as exceptional, for him.

John's already left the infirmary by the time Rodney goes looking - because he, apparently, is even more of an idiot than Ronon - and he spends a good five minutes wavering back and forth in front of the man's door. Eventually he takes a decisive step forward and palms the controls - because he ought to, to apologise, or something - and the door opens as though it's been waiting for him.

The lights are low and John's sprawled on his bed, battered and smudged and shirtless, the white bandages jarring against his skin. He's got butterfly plasters across his forehead and down beside his nose, his lip's just barely crusting over, the bruise on his cheek looks even worse than it did back on the planet and he looks - a damn sight better than he has any right to.

"Hey, McKay," John croaks, and Rodney just glares at him.

"What the hell are you doing here? You should be - " he flails towards the door - "infirmary, and people observing, and machines! BleepingJohn's uninjured eyebrow makes a bizarre motion which Rodney guesses means he'd ( ... )
