"Yes?" His name, at least, still penetrates. "Yes, what?"
"You did good," Sam tells him, and he stares at her incredulously.
"You were very brave," Teyla adds, and his shoulders hunch involuntarily so the words can slide off him, like water and duck's backs.
"I didn't do anything," he says, voice still high and tight, and Sam smiles a little, her eyes kind.
"You didn't panic, McKay."
His fists clench. It seems unjust that this should be counted as exceptional, for him.

The lights are low and John's sprawled on his bed, battered and smudged and shirtless, the white bandages jarring against his skin. He's got butterfly plasters across his forehead and down beside his nose, his lip's just barely crusting over, the bruise on his cheek looks even worse than it did back on the planet and he looks - a damn sight better than he has any right to.
"Hey, McKay," John croaks, and Rodney just glares at him.
