The Great Norrland Trip, part 1 - The Myth
Большое Путешествие по Норрланду. Часть 1 - Миф.
Начну, пожалуй, с рассказа про то, что такое Норрланд.
Географически Швеция делится на три неравные части: (сверху вниз см. карту) Норрланд, Свеаланд и Ёталанд (последний те, кому глубоко пофиг на шведское произношение, еще пишут как Гёталанд).
I think I'll start from some introduction into Swedish geography.
Geografically Sweden is divided into three unequal parts: (top down see the map) Norrland, Svealand and Götaland.

Svealand is the part that named the whole country: Sverige means literally "the land of Sweonas" The people in this part regard themselves as the most proper Swedes especially because the capital of Sweden is placed there.
Götaland is the most densely populated and the most varied part which makes it impossible to describe it in two words. In its central provinces people think that Sweden as a state was born right there and all the other parts are just newcomers. The provinces around them were taken from Denmark or Norway. In some areas people still remember it pretty well and still dislike those Swedish kings who conquerred them and all bureaucrates from the capital in general. Here they think they are more European than the rest of Swedes and the EU is much more popular here.
Свеаланд - это та часть, которая дала название всей стране - Sverige - страна свеев. Жители этой части считают себя самыми-самыми правильными шведами, тем более что столица страны находится именно тут.
Ёталанд - самая густонаселенная часть страны и самая разнообразная, что делает невозможным описать её в двух словах. В её центральных провинциях считают, что Швеция зародилась именно тут, а все остальные пристроились позднее. Провинции по краям были отвоеваны у Дании или Норвегии, в некоторых местах про это все еще живо помнят и не любят шведских королей-завоевателей и столичных бюрократов, считают себя более европейскими, чем остальных шведов, и любят Евросоюз.

И, наконец, Норрланд. По мнению жителей южной и центральной частей Норрланд - это что-то ужасно холодное, покрытое тайгой, тундрой и вечной мерзлотой и населенное лосями, комарами и мрачными молчаливыми типами в клетчатых рубашках, которые живут на социальное пособие, пьют пиво и самогон, а в свободное время раскатывают на снегоходах и браконьерствуют. Один из шведских научных журналов вот так проиллюстрировал представления южан о норрландцах:
And finally some words about Norrland. In minds of South and Central Swedes Norrland is something terribly cold, covered by taiga, tundra and permafrost and inhabited by moose, moskitos and gloomy and extremely untalkative guys who dress in plaid flannel shirts, live on social wellfare, drink beer and moonshine and in their spare time drive snowmobiles and poach. One of Swedish science magazins published this picture to illustrate the beliefs about Norrlanders:
Now after the trip I can tell you that Norrlanders are pretty much the same people as everywhere else. There are loads of moskitos in the areas close to Finnish borders, and the weather was way too hot for snowmobiles and plaid flannel shirts.
Забегая вперед, скажу, что на самом деле в Норрланде живут точно такие же люди, как и везде. Комаров до фига в приграничных с Финляндией районах, а для снегоходов и клетчатых фланелевых рубашек было слишком жарко.
