What about gay marriage does any harm to you? What about banning it does any good?

A Mormon's Lament: Church Is On the Wrong Side of History Again With Proposition 8 - "So here we are, in 2008, and now the threat is gay people who are already gay, who love each other and in many cases live together, and want to get married. How does this hurt the average Mormon family?"

Thank you for posting that, Tink. I've just recently got into yet another big debate with my mother over the teachings of the church vs the social truths of society today. She's been sending her sons propaganda, hoping to get us to vote to "Protect Marriage" but it's very quickly gone downhill. I made sure to send her this link :)

I've always thought that the gay marriage ban doesn't go far enough. In the first amendment it even states: "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof;..."

Which to me says there is a dividing line between Government and Religion. As in, since the concept of a marriage is on the Religious side, government should not even use the word marriage. OTOH, it is in the society's best interest to have, oh, say civil unions. Wait a minute, you might say, that's the same thing! Well, not really. Marriage would be a spiritual contract between you, your partner and the church. A civil union would be a legal contract between you, your partner and the government. Think common-law marriage, a justice of the peace marriage, etc.

I suppose it's a way of having your cake and eating it too.

Please note: this is really the first time I've written this concept out. I'm not to happy with my descriptions, actually.

Basically, I'm tired of having people come up and tell me if I don't support prop 102(?) I'm going to hell. And I ask them what about the concept offends them. All of the time (with few exceptions) it's based off of religious grounds, not governmental. Which means there needs to be a concept of a civil union (i.e. for child support, benefits, etc.)and another concept of marriage in which the various churchs duke it out in the various seminars that they hold.

thank you, cultural warfare.

it's amazing what a little bit of that and a mass delusion of grandeur can do for a group, isn't it?

The Yes on 8 folks were out on the street en mass with signs, and a film crew was there. As soon as we saw this, I merged over to the right lane and rolled by slowly, and Jenn and I shouted out "biggots" repeatedly at them. We were on our way to have our anniversary lunch, and this put us both in a rage. We were so ticked off heading into the PF Changs, and we immediately ordered beers to calm our nerves. Then, a sign from God? It started to rain. Hard. We wanted to go see if they all went home, but decided not to waste our time on them. Oi, I need to sleep. Gotta cast my vote tomorrow, and haven't read all the props yet.

Go Tink! Got to talk to Jess on Aim 2night, yay!

L8ta~
