I think that, contrary to being friends at the beginning of S5, they are *allies*. They don't become friendly immediately, they just accept that they're both on the same side now, that Dean is kind of keeping them both at arm's length, and they need to accept each other and work together which is what leads to the friendship that I do believe exists by later in the season, which I think has a lot to do with Sam being really compassionate and understanding how hard of a time Castiel is having being cut off from Heaven and losing faith in God.

Just my two cents, but it's not like we haven't disagreed on Castiel before. Nonetheless, I use my Sassy icon just because I never get to use my Sassy icon and I bet your making a face at it. *pinches your face*

I don't even understand how they can be allies at that point. Castiel has done absolutely nothing that could make Sam trust him. And while Dean might tell him, "Well, Castiel did this," I think at that point, Sam is beyond trusting people that seem helpful, especially after everything that happened with Ruby.

And I'm not even LOOKING at your icon. :P

Dude, Castiel just swept in and saved his and Dean's lives--not to mention that at this point, Sam has realized he was pretty wrong about the things Dean and Castiel were judging him for Season 4 and I think he would be looking back and having a harder time trusting himself than Castiel. Keep in mind, Boys don't know Cas is the one who let Sam out of the panic room. He therefore has every reason to trust him and nothing but a grudge telling him not to trust him. I like to think Sam is a little more logical than to let a grudge keep one of his very few allies on his shit list.

I can see your point of view there, but it still doesn't make sense to me. There's no reason for Sam to care about Castiel or trust the guy who almost got his brother killed and then didn't fix him. Which is obviously not a hint to the Sam/Gabriel people at all.

Hmm. I don't know, but what I've always like about the Sam/Cas relationship (and I don't mean that in a slashy way) is the fact that they are not friends. I mean, by mid season 5, maybe (Castiel claims Sam as his friend, which by the definitions you gave means he probably does consider himself attached by feelings of personal regard, if not affection, and since he was trying to stop Sam from getting killed we can assume he's no longer hostile towards him.), but season 4? Definitely not. And I liked that ( ... )

but it would have satisfied me more than the whole God fixing everything again thing.
It seems especially silly since God doesn't even seem to care about any of them. I agree about him being used very poorly this season, and I'm really disappointed that they're bringing him back.

I don't think there's a problem with that at all. It's when people are like, "NO THEY'RE BFFL" or when the show is basically telling us how a relationship works when I call bullshit. You're welcome to like it as much you want. :)

I'm not sure where the writers picked this up (I blame Julie Siege), but that has absolutely no basis on the season 4 I watched
Yeah, apparently they all went to the movies and did shots during the two seconds or so in between season four and season five. So fucking annoying. It's one of those 'show don't tell' things, and the way the show played Castiel in season five just made me dislike him even more. I know he was at times, funny, but he is so inconsistent and even more obnoxious than normal.

While Castiel is responsible for letting Sam out of the cage
And I'm still mad they never addressed that, and how Castiel thinks it's cool to blame Sam and Dean for the apocalypse. Which, hi, this is why I loathe him. He let Sam out of the cage. Fuck off and die and a fire, Castiel.

I still maintain the fact that myself and half of fandom could do him better. I feel like they just stopped trying to make him a relateable character in season 5 and just used him because fandom liked him.
