While my LJ has been quiet, I’ve actually done a lot of stuff fandom-wise. I’ve been catching up on my Things to Watch list. Here’s a rundown of my August and September viewing. Some minor spoilers, I tried very hard not to get into specifics.

my thoughts on Monster, My Neighbor Totoro, Eden of the East )

monster, eden of the east, honey and clover, my neighbor totoro, lalalalalala, recommendations, morita, anime, literary analysis

1) I'm surprised that you didn't enjoy the moral ambiguity of "Monster" more. I find (good) detective fiction to be filled with this, inclusive of Holmes. Characters like Holmes ad Poirot always struck me as realists, in that they never judged the crime (and perpetrator)by a-typical circumstance. The upstanding magistrate could be as guilty as the psycho bootlegger. To me its what's largely missing in modern crime-fiction. Alex Cross is a hero, he catches bad guys, Catherine Coulter's FBI duo are the epitome of goodness.

Though I agree 100% on the anti-scruffy hair-cut. Why Tenma, why?!

For me "Monster" was really a question in finding that bit of inescapable evil in all of us - we all have the potential for violent crime, rising above it is how we can avoid the monster within.

(Will yap forever if you let her)

2) There's nothing to be said on "My neighbour Totoro" - everyone wants to ride the Cat-bus just once! It's one of my most beloved childhood memories ( ... )

I don't know why I didn't enjoy Monster more, either. Twist endings are fine with me, maybe I was just peeved because it took so long to get there. *sheepish grin*

I guess I find it very hard to accept that the monster (no names as to not spoil others!) gets off scot-free, sort of, in the end, because of the severity of his crimes. I remember Holmes let a couple of people get away, but those were one-time crimes, and some in self-defense. (Like the chick who murdered her blackmailer, and the guy who kills the wife-beater.) But the guy in Monster was just like... wow. What's his body count? Double digits or triple digits?

But yes, what you said about the inescapable potential for evil -- yes, you hit that on the head. I know some people on the internets think that the real monster is Tenma, for being unable to... well, you know.

I don't know if you'll enjoy Eden of the East -- but tell me what you think when and if you get around to watching it.

And it's okay to keep on yapping, I enjoy it. :D

I died of joy when Totoro showed up in TS3. I am glad he didn't talk, though, given that IIRC, he mostly roars in his movie.

Oh, the Ghibli museum HEAVILY features merchandise from Totoro - there's even a little nekobus for young children to play in - so if you ever go, you'll enjoy it more having seen the movie. :3

Yeah, it was good Totoro didn't roar in Toy Story! He might scare the other toys, ha.

Oh! Ghibli Museum! :D Yet another museum to put on my must-visit one-day list. Sigh.

Yes I did watch Eden! It was fun but I had a lot of questions. And really, it felt like watching Morita in a sci fi AU. I wonder if I'm the only one who got that weird feeling about it! :P
