OK, so the real thing being studied is whether people would rather have (an average payoff of) $3 for themselves or $5 for charity, isn't it.

Honest, no! The study really was about the reactions to the speakers. The compensation choice was just to make it appeal to more people.

... and I can't participate because I'm not a native speaker. Though I've been speaking English since age 7 and I'm much better with it than with my native language :)
