texts on passing

Feb 11, 2009 21:49

There's a class that someone from MIT is teaching on passing (both race-wise and gender-wise) that looks interesting. I don't have time to take it (or anything), but I want to put some of the books on my wish list and/or borrow them. I figured some of you might have read them and might have recommendations, or might own copies you wouldn't mind ( Read more... )

passing, book recommendations, gender, race, a softer world, questions, books

I've got the Foucault, which is dense, but not terribly long. You are welcome to borrow it. I have books from a couple of classes looking at gender and sexuality. I'll jot down the titles tomorrow.

kind of has good bits but is certainly theoryish.

Thanks! I think I'm going to go for the less theoryish stuff first, but I'll let you know if I want to take you up on that later. And any other titles would be great!

I have read a few of those. I liked Passing, Whipping Girl, Nobody Passes. Patrick Califia's books are more like crunchy journalistic history and thus more accessible than trying to figure out even 1 paragraph of judith butler. You can find a bunch of Julia Serano's writing online... I recommend her...

Thanks for the recs! Even judith butler's titles scare me, so she's kind of low on my list.

i would just avoid the foucault too then. i kind of love him in a love/hate way but, what a pretentious pain in the ass.

Memories'd for future reference; I'm really quite fascinated by gender-identity and "passing" (partially 'cause I Have Issues, partially because Ooh, Science!), and while I haven't read much on the topic thus far (or much non-fiction don't judge me my book list is too long as it is dammit), I'm definitely interested in the maybe not quite so dry-and-scientific material.

*nod* I totally understand the non-fiction avoidance. I've been reading a bit more of it myself lately, but that's partly because I've found some really accessible stuff. Not sure how much of the above is science and how much is humanities, biography, and fiction, but I hope you'll also find some cool/useful stuff from the list and recs here!

I really enjoyed Lockpick Pornography. Hope you have the same experience! :-)
