Um, yeah. There's a bunch of nice museums. It's a nice place to walk around or bike around. There are bars and clubs of every variety. They show movies in english, which is a nice break if you're in the middle of a big europe trip. There are lots of random festivals and street markets. Go ride to the countryside and see windmills (rent a bike and bike there). I don't know when you'll be in amsterdam...if your trip is long, and you can manage it, try to be there for queen's day (late april i think). It's supposed to be the craziest day of the year there. I really enjoy just walking around the city, usually smoking as I do so. Did I mention shrooms are legal? There's also the heineken "brewery" tour, casinos, shopping if you're into that sort of thing. There are comedy shows (some in english), sex shows, concerts (classical and modern, the symphony is worth checking out actuall). It's also worth walking through the red-light district, but don't try to take pictures of the whores...
i like the idea of bicycling, what's the best place? i heard haarlem (really the name) or utrecht is a cool place to walk around in. is there any truth to that?
i want to see the main tourist stuff like the rijkmuseum, the van gogh museum, and the anne frank house, how are the lines? are there any museum passes or anything?
I don't know about "best" but the ubiquitous bikes everywhere are from MacBike (lots of locations, you'll find it in any tourist guide) and they're fine. That's what I rented. The museum lines are generally not bad in amsterdam. I don't know if there's discount passes, if you're going to buy an ISIC you may be able to get some discounts, but the prices weren't bad so I didn't worry about it too much. I've never been to utrecht or haarlem, though I've heard good things. I went to the hague. We went to the ICTY, it's kinda cool to see a war crimes hearing. The place is small, but it's kind of interesting. I've also been told rotterdam is pretty cool.
