What a brilliant piece of writing, Laura! Gah. I'm still mush over the finale some 18 hours later so this helps a LOT. This is such a beautiful piece of writing, darling, it's making me all glassy-eyed again, but in a good way, you know? *g*

I love how it's her mother she sees; knowing how much Kate grieves for her it's only natural that Johanna would be there during those brief moments -- before Kate's inate survival instinct chases her mother's image away and drags Kate back to reality. The near-death experience often comes down to a painful choice, innit? Who to stay with, who to leave behind.

Oh and randomly? Castle and his desperate 'Kate, stay with me' just ripped my heart out. *angsts*
