I have really enjoyed the photo series on small, northeastern ND towns. Many years ago I was a Missileer at Grand Forks AFB, assigned to the 446th Strategic Missile Squadron. The 446th was the furthest north of the three squads and included towns like Inkster, Conway, Langdon, Pisek, Nekoma, Edinburgh, et. al.
Those are such great towns up there! And I love the pyramid at Nekoma! So were you up at one of those missile command centers or whatever they're called? I guess I'm not sure how it all works, or worked before they got rid of all the missiles...
Yes, I was a missile launch officer (missileer) with the 446th Strategic Missile Squadron. I sat alert from '78 to '82. Although assigned to the northernmost squadron I managed to make the 'grand circle' and pull alert duty at all 15 launch control facilities (LCFs) in the wing, from ALPHA-ZERO up northwest of Langdon to MIKE-ZERO down by Hope.
The guidance radar at Nekoma was shut down some time before I arrived. I did, however, bring back the town hall desk from Nekoma, a gigantic hand-made roll top. I purchased it at an auction in August '82 at the nekoma School.
Uh, yeah, I've been trying to call your ass since your birthday! Either your hubby answers, or no one answers, or it goes directly to voice mail! :( Have you been away?
