Next we went to Bathgate, which I'd been itching to see for a long time. I knew about the old Blind School, which isn't abandoned (yet), but I had no idea the rest of the town was so... abandoned... :)
I wanna explore that school too! Too bad about the nuns... :)
I would guess its becoming a ghost town for the same reason they all become ghost towns. Young people leave because there are no good jobs, and old people die or move away to be closer to family or health care. Maybe when lots of people farmed there were reasons to have all these little towns, but now that farms are huge and few people live on them, no one is getting supplies at small-town stores anymore. Its usually a Bad Sign when the railroads have come out and pulled up all the track that used to go to your town! :)
Typical Death of the American small town. Too bad. Didn't know if it was a factory town or what not say built around a particular industry. Seems like yesterdays gold boom towns are todays Textile, car industry etc.
If we quit having small towns, will we quit having hicks, rednecks and hillbillys? Dear Lord what will become of country music and the mouth harp?
I guess in that case, it's industry was farmin', and the institution (blind school) that was closed down.
But the hicks will persist! I have faith! I lived in Wisconsin for a year. I believe this may be their new hideout. They move into suburban housing and have regular jobs, but I know them by their mullets and affinity for the banjo...
I wouldn't say too bad about the nuns. At least there is someone there taking care of that magnificent building. As fun as abandoned places are to look at, it's just sadness knowing they were abandoned.
I actually saw a neighbor put that paintable textured wallpaper on her ceiling a few years back. I am tempted to try it myself, but will probably never get the nerve.
