Memorial Day Adventure Day 2, Part 11 - The Olson Farm

I just have to say again, for the record, Cannibal! The Musical is one of the best movies I have ever seen! I can't even believe those snobs at Sundance said it was "unwatchable." Its excellent! The songs are in my head constantly. OMG everyone who appreciates sick humor must go out and watch it at once ( Read more... )

My friend Tammy's parents were German Lutheran (Schmidt) and Irish Catholic (Devine). It was a HUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUGE event when Marilyn Schmidt and Roger (Bud) Devine got married. Once Tammy was born, in 1959, they even considered divorce because they were arguing over where she would be baptized and in what religion she would be raised. They managed to work it out, though. Marilyn and kids went to the Lutheran church, Bud went to the Catholic. There were many "mixed" marriages like that in Belle Plaine, and often the wife went to the Lutheran church while the husband and kids went to the Catholic church. I knew a couple older folks whose marriage plans were foiled in the '50s due to wanting to cross The Religious Line and being Squashed by their families. Very weird, that it was such an issue only 50 years ago.

It is totally weird. It makes me wonder what issues today will seem so silly in 50 years!

The Ray Meister is Catholic. The Catholic Church was just 2 blocks away from our Lutheran Church, and when we'd drive by me mum would say "There's dad's church." But I never remember him going there. He went to church with us, but never would join or take communion because deep down inside he's still Catholic. He doesn't like people dissing the Pope either! His parents were the same way. His father is Norwegian/Swedish and was raised Protestant (though I'm pretty sure he hasn't set foot inside a church in like 70 years, because he'd probably burn up if he did), while Ray's mother was French Catholic. Me mum always told me it was the mother's decision what the children were raised. Sounds like it wasn't always that way though.

Its interesting that in my parent's divorce papers, the judge specifically ruled that Bage and I would be raised Lutheran. Was me mum afraid Ray would send our souls to Hell by turning us into Catholics? Hmmmm... :P

More amazing pictures! And how cool that you were able to go back to your roots and see where your family is from?

Just curious, what state is this in (or did I miss that in another post?).

Thanks! All the pictures I've been posting of my last trip are from North Dakota. We went from the central part of the state to the eastern part, all along the Canadian border.

These have such a magnificent ethereal quality to them. Your personal back story makes it that much more grand. Reminiscent of the quiet solemn feeling when I look at Andrew Wyeth's "Christina's World"

potential painting? Ummmm yes. It would be a sin NOT to paint it :)

Thanks! I love "Christina's World"!

I have a couple other things I want to paint first, but this would be easier AND people Loooooove water pumps! :)

I've gone in worse places...VERY carefully, but with those leaning walls and funky floors, it looks pretty risky!! And that last pic would make a GREAT painting...maybe put an old rusty car or tractor by/behind it too??

Yeah I'm actually thinking about going back, and at least going all the way up to the door to get a good picture of the insides. Don't know if I'd have the balls to step on that floor, though if I could get a better look at it I might be able to tell if it could be safe...
